Eastern NC 35

I would love to run one of them! never done it and I am sure thereis a learning curve. May contact them come january and see what we can work out. Thanks for the help!

Shoot me a PM if you go that route, I’ll share what I’ve learned, sometimes the hard way. Lol.

It feels like there’s always something to work on, something to improve. That’s the frustrating, rewarding curse called habitat management.

Thanks for the help, when our land was logged it was logged by 13 something heirs and I believe they told the logger do whatever however to make us the most money. They spent no time fixing roads and skidder trails so many places are difficult to walk, much less drive over. I almost hurt myself driving ATV into a rut that was 2 ft deep. With the tractor I normally walk the land we are gonna clear before my dad drives over it. Slow process, but better than rolling the tractor in a ditch.

Checked trail cams today before muzzleloader opener in eastern nc. 95 degrees yesterday. 83 tomorrow.

Need another week for last spraying of weeds, but had a hurricane coming and guaranteed rain. That's 2.5 weeks from seeding.

Yeah I was wanting to get seeds in the ground before the hurricane hit but couldn’t get down there. Looking good, considering how dry it’s been.

A week after for at rain we got another good soaking rain. Been dry since, not seeing any rain in forecast so glad it's cooled off some.

Hurricanes are good in that they all but guarantee rainfall. However, last year we received over 10inches of rain in 2 days and had lots of puddles that were bare. Germination outside those puddles were great and plants thrived, but lots of round bare spots that eventually sprouted grass this spring. We have come to take the bare spots as without rainfall, we could end up with a total failure of a plot.

This is looking to the east. LEft plot is 1/2 acre and planted with approx 3lbs durana, 5lbs med red clover, 10lbs buckwheat, 2lbs radish, 1 lb turnip. Right plots is 50lb wheat/oats, 5 lbs turnips.

This plot is looking south and lined with pear trees on the left and oaks on the right. Modified LC mix. LEFT side is 2lbs turnips, 3 lb radish, 3 lbs med red clover and 25lbs wheat. Right side is 75 lbs wheat/oats, 3 lbs medium red clover, 10lbs buckwheat, 5lbs sunflowers.

Looks really good. I spread, dragged & sprayed last Sunday afternoon, 200lbs of rye & oats. Going back this afternoon to spread couple other areas with rye, oats & my greens mix. Hopefully the rain forecast for Sunday-tues will help & I don’t waste my greens.

Im debating doing a little overseeding some bare spots before my sat hunt. Cant decide on small seed like clover, or guaranteed to germ and be green rye grain.

Meeting with the forest service tomorrow afternoon to go over the plan of attack. Whats the best way to keep a fire lane open when starting at bare dirt? let nature take over and bush hog in spring to set it back?

No go on the fire lanes, too much fuel growing. Be at least 5 years before we can burn. Did get to check crops but at 86 degrees and no wind just too hot to hunt.

Plot was seeded with radish, chicory, and buckwheat in loose strips. Whole plot got red clover and cereal mix. Browsing wheat more than others.

Road was planted with a mix of clovers, and a light buckwheat seed that was leftover. Thatch was a little too heavy in one spot , but still has some germination. Heavier thatch definitely slows germination.

Hunted yesterday afternoon. NW wind that was kinda swirling to the west and then back to the North, not ideal, but my best option.
Last week had a nice deer slip by me by crossing the far end of the road i have planted in clover. I texted my dad whose out of town the picture, saying we need to clear that area so we have more time to get a shot on a deer crossing to cheek that clover.
new clearing idea.jpg
Well sure enough around 5:15 a doe come out of the left side near the creek bottom and walks up towards my clover and looks behind her. She then immediately walks back down to creek and off to the right. I have a spike downwind of me to the right of this clover in my turnips, so im keeping an eye on him. I look back towards where the doe was and see horns and a large body. Put scope up and get a glimpse of antlers but his head is in the brush on the right side but he stops broadside for a second. Have had a deer put the slip on me at this exact location, so I dont hesitate and put a round in the sweet spot. Hear him take off make a loud noise and then a pause and another loud noise, but didnt sound loud enough to the death crash. Start 2nd guessing myself. did he crash? did i miss? did i hit brush? Well i didnt have long to think before I check back on the spik in my turnips dead down wind and sure enough one of 3 mature deer to frequent out farm is broadside staring down to the creek where i just shot. See his rack and immediately know he is my shooter. Put scope on him and squeeze. 5 mins of legal light left and its cloudy so my light is all but gone, so i couldnt see what he did. No crash.
Give em 10 mins as I walk my bro in law hunted the back section through what happened.
Walk to the 2nd deer. Cant find blood. Middle of big turnip leaves and not a drop. we made a loop at the end of the trail to turn tractor and atv around, so i walked the loop. No blood. Walk back towards the stand and look into the briars and there he lays. Search around him and not a drop of blood. Went 20 yds, but through briars too thick to walk through. Literally took 30 mins to drag him 20 yds.

I knew that deer was a good buck, but wasn't so sure about the 1st deer. Was hoping he is the big mature 7, no eye guards, who had been walking that creek. Walk to where I thought he was at, no blood. Starting to 2nd guess myself for the 2nd time. Brother in law walks to get the truck and 25yds further that I looked he said I GOT BLOOD. He follows blood 50 yds through the creek bed and into a pine thicket and there lays the first deer I shot, a 2.5 year old 6 pointer. Would have been happy with the first deer alone, but the 2nd one takes the cake

The deer on the left is at least 3.5-4.5 years old and was the most mature deer on our farm. Going to cut out both jaw bones to get deer aged. He is the largest deer killed here in 3 years and is top 3 biggest we have on camera. You can see from my smile that I couldn't be happier with these deer. Deer on the right has 2 broke points and some scarring on his head from fighting.
