Not sure if this helps, but those fruits seem to be ripe. They were easily falling off if I bumped the bush.
So, I guess they are green when ripe and won't change colors??

Reminds me of bladder nut.....but not 100% certain.....
Definately not the same bladder nut that I see growing nearby my place. The fruits are small, about the size of a hawthorn fruit. The bladder nut that I know, has a larger paper-like sack with seeds inside, not berries. Is there a different shrub thats also called bladder nut?

Seems that Brushpile and/or Native ate some of these last year. But danged if i can remember.

Tap,

I'm just not sure on this one. If the fruit is really green when ripe, then my guess below will not be right.

I'm thinking it is one of the deciduous Ilex (holly) species. The main ones are: Ilex mucronata and ilex montana, but there are more that are all very similar. People call them by all kinds of different names such as catberry, false holly, big-leaved holly, mountain holly, winterberry holly, possum holly and the list goes on and on. Even the experts use different names.

Some of them would occur in east central Ohio. The berries of any of these would eventually change color. Other than that, I feel pretty good about my guess.

Good luck. Maybe someone else will recognize it for sure.

Your right.....I knew the bladder nut "seed" was a green one, but forgot about them being "hollow". My mistake....
