DCO Growers?

Phil,
The one in my picture above is from seed I got from you I think when you gathered up there (2008?). When are your acorns usually ready for harvest? I have seen small ones on my tree above but have never collected a viable acorn. Also glad you made it over here.

Here's one in my back yard that I direct seed three years ago. It is about 30" tall now. Picture taken this spring. I've since cleaned up around it and got rid of some of the competition. I was expecting it to do a little bit more growing this year but it hasn't really done much. DCOs are frustrating.

He is a she. LOL. I stop by their house every fall and drop off honey and jelly in exchange for hazelnut/oatmeal cookies! I will contact her and let her know to come over here. They got a lot of pretty DCO's.

LLC that is who I got my DCO from that I have been growing from nuts. Tell them I lost their contact information.

I would hate to miss this year. I made beginner mistakes with first batch and ready to do better. Thanks for the info.

Better be there by early September or you will miss out. I'd start on September 1st if you can and see how close they are. By say September 10th, all I can find are shells on the ground.

Matt that is an excellent video. I like he showed the two different shapes that we might get. I have many strategically planted with intend to plant another 100 over 225 acres in the next two years. I did purchase bare root from Alan at the Wildlife Group but now I am growing from the DCO nuts.

Here ya go. The first one is about 5ft tall with a trunk a little bigger around than your thumb. The second pic is a cluster of them with forearm sized trunks. All are loaded with acorns this yr. I see little chance that they are DCO, but it never hurts to have others look...

Leaves look more like DCO to me that regular chinkapin.
 
South Central Kansas... they predominantly grow on the rocky outcrops near the top of a bluff.

I'd definitely take a handful to try!!! Live in Olathe and would plant them there along with a buddies property in Chanute. PM Sent!!!

The best part about direct seeding for me is the diversity that can be achieved, since not all nurseries have KS, NE, IA, MO etc etc remnant sources.

Acorns are being produced on both the direct seeded and seedling plantings I've done since 2007 or 2008. I would not be able to tell the difference today which was which had it not been known.

My best "DCO" from an Oikos seedling....not sure if its a true DCO since others are half its size and throw on way more acorns. This one has only had a few the past couple years. The DCO next to it is also a seedling from the same batch from Oikos for example.....

 
This was the fall of 2012 from a Tarkio Prairie DCO planted in 2007 or 2008 as an acorn (wished I kept better track).

Had acorns that year and is well out of the cage now.



As of 2015....have not been back this year to look them over.
