Day Late n Dollar Short...But

In addition to Ribs and Wings on the Traeger, we used leftover brisket for nachos. Let’s just our Super Feast did not suck:)

You guys are killing me. I've been on the Keto diet. My Superbowl feast was a combination of low carb veggies and shrimp. I miss my BBQ

I just did the standard rotel velveeta ground chuck and Jimmy dean sausage. Ready for some leftovers!!
lak - Love me some Jimmy Dean sage or hot sausage. Always thought it was about as good a store bought sausage as you could find. But, bout 6 months ago somebody turned me on to Tennessee Pride. Mercy me...gonna have to find some home brew sausage to beat that.

Elk...Intended to smoke a butt on the Traeger but saw where Publix was selling pulled pork for $6 n change a lb so went that route. They sliced me off a pound from a smoked butt. I came home, wrapped it in foil and put it in oven for 2 hrs at 300. Mercy me! I was pleasantly surprised at the flavor and tenderness when I proceeded to shred it. Made for a fine plate of nachos with all the other goodies to go with it.

Ain't nothing wrong with Keto. I post a lot of farm cooks on here which often don't qualify for Keto style meals. But during the week, we eat pretty dang low carb. Lots of veggies and less meat than I've ever ate in my life. Growing up, if mama didn't serve a meat with each meal we didn't think we had a meal. Funny how things change over time.

Jeff, I am on the Keto diet and barbecue is a staple of mine. I started Keto in 2011 and lost 75 lbs in 6 months and ate barbecue almost every day! I have gone back and forth but have never gotten back to within 20 lbs of where I originally started which was 276 lbs. I know it’s not good to go back and forth but I usually go on Keto 1st of the year until my birthday in late March. I am 6’2” and my average weight is 215-220 at the time my birthday hits. I usually go off of it then and by next January I am usually around 240...this year I am 221 right now and will probably be around 210 in March...I consider my perfect weight at 220 but I like a buffer. I got down to 196 in early 2012 and everyone said I looked sickly...

Keto is lots of meat!

I'm about 2 1/2 weeks into it and I'm in the carb craving stage. I don't need to lose the weight but am trying to become "fat adapted" for endurance events. I'm trying to stay less than 20 grams of carbs per day. I show pork bbq as 33 grams from one source and 47 grams on another source. I did have brisket last week. I should have been more specific. When I think of bbq I envision a whopping pulled pork sandwich with a large helping of fries and a pretty good dose of bbq sauce.

Those are some awesome gains..or I guess losses. You're extending your life as well and I'm sure you feel better. Good for you!

As Okie said meat is ok as long as you keep the protein in the less than 30% range. As far as things changing here's something for ya: 1970's "coffee is good" 1980's "coffee is bad", 1990's "coffee is good again", Just last week read " coffee linked to diabetes". Crazy

Coffee linked to diabetes or Frappuccino? That’s what some are calling coffee these days.

I’ve been intermittent fasting over the past few months. Basically eating from 11 AM to around 6 PM. Occasionally I’ll intermittent fast with a keto diet but it’s easy to fall off that wagon!

I certainly don't know the science behind heredity and obesity...some say it's as much heredity as it is life-style. Most that where chubby as a kid seem to battle weight for a lifetime. That's the case with me. Chubby as a kid...lean as a teenager and young adult, and now in my 60s, have to really watch nutrition to lose or maintain weight. When not traveling, I'm in the gym at lunch during the week, eat what most would consider healthy with very little processed food/grains/bread/sugar, and lots of veggies/nuts/berries and some fruit. 45 minutes in the gym doesn't offset sitting behind a desk for most of the other time but it helps. Nor does business travel and entertaining in the evenings.

I've found the intermittent fasting thing to be very helpful for weight loss as well. Occasionally skipping both breakfast and lunch drops pounds faster than anything I've done. If I blow it out on an evening or weekend event I know a few days of intermittent fasting are in order. I hope when I retire I will have the discipline to make daily workouts a regular routine along with good nutrition. Lots of inspiration at lunch each day when I go to the gym. There's a fairly large group of retired guys in there that are there most every day. Some of them well in to their 70's and in great shape, doing both cardio and strength training. Till then...gonna do all I can to stay in reasonably decent shape with a job and lifestyle that involves a lot of sitting and eating out. Working hard at the gym to keep decent wheels underneath me. I cringe when I see folks out and about during the day that have that "done give up" look and don't ever want to be there.

Here's an interesting read or listen (if your in to audio-books)...The Obesity Code by Jason Fung, that focuses on insulin levels. Big proponent of intermittent fasting.

Keto is definitely complex. I believe that's the reason most people don't stick with it. Intermittent fasting is easy. It's not a diet, it's a schedule with some amazing results for many including myself.

When I decided to get myself back in shape a few years ago I started with IF. The results were dramatic. I was 172 lbs and dropped to 148 in 2 months. I was training 3 days a week as well which helped. Something I've tried recently is to push the 16 hour fast to a 20-22 hour fast three days a week. It's actually not that difficult. The cellular health from the autophagy (cleansing the body of dead cells) is reason enough to do it but I've also experienced a fair amount of mental clarity and the deepest sleep I've had in years. Wasn't expecting that but it's a nice bonus.
