CROSSBOW?

...This year I had to have a shoulder replacement and was only able to use the crossbow during the bow season...
todd

So Todd was able to use his daughter's crossbow. This brings to mind one of the major advantages of a crossbow in my opinion. As a father of five teenagers, it would be outrageously expensive to outfit every kid with their own archery equipment. This is okay because my ground isn't big enough for six hunters and the kids are so busy with sports and other activities they usually aren't all available to hunt at the same time anyway. We have two crossbows they take turns using. Can't do that with compounds. They would each need their own individual set up including arrows, not to mention having to replace them as they grow. Not practical for this family. I'm very grateful crossbows are an option in Michigan.

I guess the way I look at it personally is, i have a compound and a crossbow, I dont really enjoy the compound but no matter which is in my hands ill be sitting in the same tree the same days shooting at the same deer. A crossbow doesnt make me shoot more deer or hunt longer or take shots I shouldnt take ect but thats just me. I know not everyone is that way though.

I got one for the very reason Osceola mentioned. I have used it myself. I limit shots for me and my kids to 30 yards (same as my vertical bow). I prefer my compound, but especially late season with the additional bulk of winter hunting clothes a crossbow is just an easier choice.

Thats why I asked that question,to each their own but isn't something with a AR lower, scope and a trigger? Most states don't even survey enough to know what the harvest is
What crossbow has an AR lower? None that I know of currently, PSE had one not sure if they still sell it. Even so what does an AR lower have to do with anything? I shoot recurve, compound, crossbow, muzzle loader and rifle. What ever gets more people into hunting I support as our strength is in our numbers.

There are several brands that have AR lowers, what i am saying is that something with a scope, rifle parts, butt stock and stays drawed isn't meant for archery season. It was the crossgun manufacturers that got it pushed through even though most states already allowed for age or disabilities.I agree on getting more people in woods but when you start seeing draw tags and shorter seasons because of higher deer harvests look at the numbers and see if they have increased since adding them.Take the scopes off them so they aren't a long range weapon.I always hear i don't shoot any further than my regular bow and then they talk about shooting at 60-100 yards.I bet if alot of antler steps out at 50 yards most shoot because of scope and crossbow.

Here is something to think about.....(I'm not singling any particular member out, just to let y'all know)

Every time someone has said "scope and crossbow", replace it with "compound bow with sights". Wonder why I asked you to do that? Because every argument made about a crossbow and sights, is the same argument made back in the late 60's, early 70's by recurve and long bow(traditional) guys when the compound was coming around to being used during hunting season.

I heard the same arguments in my home state when they were voting on letting everyone use a crossbow, instead of the elderly and handicapped. I heard the same arguments when I was trying to help Louisiana sportsmen get crossbows to be allowed during their hunting season by everyone. It hasn't made a difference in deer harvest numbers at all. The state still says how many deer need to be shot on a yearly basis around the state and as far as I can tell, those numbers don't get met 100%. It always tends to lean more towards the buck side, instead of the doe where it needs to be. We stay pretty consistent in numbers. This doesn't matter if we have a influx of people moving in from out of state and/or new hunters. For every person that moves here from somewhere else or new hunter that gets introduced to the sport, we have someone move out of state or stop hunting because of age, death, every day life, or loss of interest.

I have searched since this thread and cannot find any manufacturer that uses an AR lower for a crossbow.

PSE use to offer the TAC15 with an AR lower but no longer offers that model. Please list any manufacturer that use an AR lower?

Most company warranties are void if bought off of eBay and other internet sites. They want them bought from a dealer. PSE will start following this policy in 2018. I work at a PSE dealer and if I sell a bow over the web, the warranty will be null and void as of next year.

I think it's too unfair to foreigners or other state people who can not buy from dealers

I have a question,Is there a reason that a person would chose a crossbow over a regular bow if not handicapped or to small to draw poundage other than it's easier and doesn't require practice.I know if I was had shot one with a scope for the last 20 years where i could shoot 50 yards I would be famous for all the big bucks that were just outside my range for a real bow.I just don't agree that they should be in bow season unless handicapped or young.Unless you remove the scope and the AR lower. In gun season fine. It's all about money but it has started showing the drastic increase in harvest during archery seasons.

Sounds like you use a primitive Homemade Stick Bow, and Home Made Flint Broadheads. I certainly hope you aren't wearing modern clothes for hunting. Are you hunting bareback on a horse? Get real man. People modernize sometimes because they want too, and other times because they have too. I shot a Stick Bow for more than 30 years, till my shoulders said enough... I shot a compound for 15 years, and now even that's too much. I'm going to buy a Crossbow to allow me another few years of hunting. Be a snob hunter if you must, but allow the rest of us to continue hunting as we will... Sorry for being confrontational folks.

Cuz it's fun

Beware of crossbows, I need help! I'm a lifetime compound bow hunter here, after starting out with a recurve . I intended to only use a crossbow until my shoulder healed up from rotator cuff surgery. But I've found crossbows to be more addictive than the oxycodone that they gave to me after the surgery. I only used the pills for five days but I now I'm finding I just can't seem to get off of crossbows, and recently I'm getting the urge for even more speed. I'd like to find a "dealer" and buy a raven, but will I just need another fix if I give in to this urge?
Just like the old stick bow guys warned us, "using" a compound was the gateway to the crossbow, I should've stuck with the recurve and never touched the good stuff that makes me feel so happy

Just my opinion but steer clear of ravin, so many lawsuits against them right now and so many people hurt from them.....

I have shot a Raven and it is a pretty sweet bow. The only drawback that I have found is the cost of maintenance. They recommend changing the string every 200 shots or 2 years. The guy that let me shoot his was already at 125 shots and has only had it a couple months. I recommend every 2 years on a bow string and that is with normal and above normal shooting. If the string is well taken care of, I tell them they can push 3 years on it, but it starts stretching and you will lose speed. If a cable is needed, I will suggest it, but most times a cable can go for 3 years. If rotated correctly, you will be in the bow shop getting it looked at and maintenance done every year. My average cost of changing a string is approx $65 OTD and a set of cables is about the same.

The only thing I have seen is the nocks and there is/was a recall on them.

The reason for the nock recall was because so many of the crossbows were shooting without the trigger being pulled, some people got badly injured. I'm a frequent member on crossbowtalk and there is some gruesome pics on there of the damage. Nocks however wernt the real problem, hopefully the r10/r20 fixed it but with the super narrow tenpoint now i'd never consider a ravin. Plus they have a ton of patent lawsuits agains them as well.

Do you have any thoughts about the mission sub1?
