Corn picker

Any of y'all ever use a single row corn picker? I'm looking to get one to pick the 5 acres of corn I plan on planting each year. My dad used to have one but sold it when we sold the farm, and apparently someone bought his unit from the dealer immediately.

It looks like New Idea 323 was a popular model back in the day, and there are a few available across the country. What would something like that be worth?

Well old Son ..I went bananas one time on my hobby farm (240AC) and bought a 55 John Deere combine with bean head and 2 row corn head ..$350.00 ...I used it for 3 or 4 years ..but had no barn and got tired of...... A. chasing the tarp on it and B. working on it ..

You are about where I was but just to do a reality check for ya ...most of the pickers were just that ..pickers ..still on the cob pickers ..then you either have to hammer mill it and feed it cob n all as in hogs or mix it for cattle ... or run it thru a sheller and feed other critters like chickens ..oh yes ..and you will need a wagon to pull behind the picker to catch the corn ..then I gotta ask ..have you ever shoveled corn on the cob? ...I have and it will make ya want to slap your Momma!!!! ...but you may have a ready market for city slickers to buy corn on the cob for their city slicker squirrels ..(I assume a city slicker squirrel knows what to do with corn on the cob)

But I admire your spunk ..and would willingly contribute to your Delinquency with the following FREE offer ..I will give you a model 55 John Deere Combine with12 foot bean header and 2 row corn picker ..all you have to do is come get it.. I would say an equipment hauler would get it to you for around $1500 ..you would have to drain the gas ..a new battery and the header lift valve started acting funny so I have to call it bad ..and the generator rebuilt ..but hauling and all will be about where the full set up for the picker will be.

If you are handy working on equipment this deal is made in heaven for an tinkerer ..but either project you choose to follow will require being handy with equipment and finding joy in making yesterdays "stuff" do todays job

Good luck ..and my off is no bull

The problem is finding one that is not rusted out or plain worn out. I know a guy who uses one and it took him a while to find one worth the money.

If you get one, just remember that they are one of the more dangerous pieces of equipment a farmer used to use.

Thanks, Bear! I am not a tinkerer, but I have a farmer friend who is. Let me talk to him and see what he says.

I grew up watching my dad pick corn with his single row corn picker. He was still using it up to a few years ago when he sold the farm. I have in fact shoveled cob corn many times, and I've done it in the South Carolina heat! Around here people pay $10 a bushel for cob corn to feed the deer, so there's a good market for it.
