How do you keep the grass short in this area? Mowing?

These are in what was a hayfield. I have cut the grass in the past but since last August I run cows on it. I have several more years before the trees shade out the bahia and Bermuda. My hope is that the cows will help fertilize the trees and keep grass down. One day I hope to be able to bail straw.

Great looking property. Nice looking pears, I've got 4 Kieffers I planted last year that were 5 foot tall at planting.

These are pineywoods cattle or cracker cattle that I just bought. They will be grazed in part of my longleaf pine. These cattle are descendants of the old Spanish cattle. There is a family a few miles from me that have had these cattle in their family since the late 1800s. I like the history of them and the fact that they once roamed the woods all over the southeast.

Dogdoc,
The cattle are broken down into different strains according to which family has kept the breed alive. These cattle were isolated from other cattle and can be registered as true pineywoods cattle. The Barnes family strain roamed the woods around my area. The family has been able to keep some of these cattle since the 1800's. No other cattle have been introduced into the herd. The bull I got came from them and the heifers are Robinson /Barnes mix from someone else. I hope to get a couple more heifers in the next year from the Barnes family so I can eventually have only Barnes cattle. I am related to them by marriage way back so the history is important to me.

Pics from the burn today. Clearcut that was sprayed in early July and will be planted in longleaf this winter

Lakngulf it was hot and little windy but we got a good burn. Not getting any of the rain yet. It's been a very wet August for me up until the last week. Finally dry enough to burn. Ill post some pics later of after the burn

Just finished read of history on those cattle. So interesting. Long horn strains are popular in my area but first time for me on the Piney strain. I enjoy your love of the land, it shows. Cool read, thanks for showing.
