Check your Chestnuts

Keith, those trees look good and will grow good, but my experience is with the pines so close they'll not get enough sunlight to produce viable chestnuts. Mine did that for years until I had my pines thinned and removed within 50 yards of the trees.

This is the best of four Dunstan chestnuts my dad planted on his property last summer. It was planted as a 7 gallon tree and was purchased at Walmart for $11. Pretty impressive growth so far this year.

Those look much better then the two that I got from Wal-Mart last year. I bet you have a few nuts on them this year. Which reminds me... I need to go to Wal-Mart and see if they have the trees marked down yet.

Kind of a spur of the moment thing but we are expecting rain today so I got out and threw a little Miracle Grow Orchid fertilizer down around each tree in my yard.

Here are a couple of links that may help if you are waiting on the Dunstans to go on sale at Walmart.

I checked my local Walmart Monday and they were still full price. I didn't check this morning and they went on sale today and I have left town for the weekend. Hopefully they will still have some when I get back Sunday. The 7 gallon trees look really good this year. Most were over 1 inch in diameter and almost 9 feet tall.

Went to stalk my prey at Wal-Mart today on lunch break. The CSM was at lunch and the other workers said they couldn’t negotiate price. Tree are still looking pretty good and they are keeping them watered. Waiting on half off or better then I’ll pounce.

Those trees look nice Matt. I picked up two 7 gallon trees yesterday afternoon for $19 a piece. They were full of catkins so maybe I will have a few chestnuts later this year. I had noticed on the brickseek link Friday that they had been marked down. No one had marked the trees though. They still had the $39 price on the sign in front of them, but they scanned at $19. There were 13 of the 7 gallon trees there yesterday. Those 13 trees have been sitting there from the original shipment. I don't think they even sold one. There were only 3 of the 5 gallon trees. The trees were beautiful though. The two I picked up were a little over 8.5 feet tall and both were over 1 inch in diameter. Now I just need to decide if I want to try and plant them now or wait until December. I will be planting them at my parents' place and I am not sure if my dad will water them this summer.

I would take $19 for the 7 gallon trees all day long. I have a $100 bill waiting for this project.

This late in the year, If you can’t water them I’d keep them at the house and wait till they go dormant to plant.

Just checked brickseek and ours are still regular price. Last year I scored two. Both were almost dead and they had never been marked down. I had to go find a CSM and negotiate a price. They were about to throw them in the dumpster!

Finally got to the mountains. Everything is just beginning to green up at this elevation; 3k.

All 11 trees I planted in October are living and appear healthy.

Our Walmart in the mountains hasn’t even received their first shipment yet, should arrive this week according to the Chestnut Hill website. But...I’m not paying full price.

My chestnuts are just waking up. I need to pick up a few more and troll the local retailers waiting for marked down prices as well.....

My Walmart had the dunstans on clearance when I went today. Picked up five trees for $12 a piece. Just a heads up for anyone that’s looking.

Next phase of the pollination process. Catkins are opening up. At least that’s the best way I know how to describe it. These are on my Dunstan trees. The late dropping Chestnuts are not quite there yet.

Mine are starting to green up. What maintenance do you recommend ? Should I remove tubes and remove the dead leaves ?

If possible, I’d slide the tube up and remove the dead leaves. Other than that they are pretty maintenance free. I also hit mine with a little Miracle Grow Orchid granular fertilizer. If you do this make sure and get the kind that is made for fertilizing orchids and other acid loving plants.
