I bought a nut package from soil and water conservation district tree sale. One of the trees is butternut. I didn't tube last years tree so am unsure if this is truly butternut or black ealnut. I have a lot of squirrel planted black walnut.

Whole tree.

All I can say is that it is very difficult to tell the difference between the two in the younger stages of life.

My grandfather planted a small orchard of walnut with 3 butternut mixed in and these trees are now 50 feet tall and I know they are in there and I still have to look very, very close to find the "odd balls". The bark is slightly different....the leaves are tough to tell. You can also tell by cutting a branch to see the heart wood (dark = walnut, light = butternut). The other way I can tell is by the nut. A walnut is more round like a ball while a butternut is more shaped like a lemon or lime with being more pointed on the ends. Once you ID the tree - mark it with a metal tag so you know later.....
