Test of the Buck Forage Oats is "so far, so good". Early growth is encouraging
And the deer are enjoying
But fields with just regular oats and wheat are doing good also, and the deer are hammering
Always good to see some locals enjoying the plots
I have a couple of plot areas that have been planted for several years now that I decided not to plant, but just keep mowed until season started. I wanted to encourage some natural growth from the seed already there, mainly rye grass. I mowed for the last time today

Enough diff in BFO to warrant increased cost based on your assessment at this point? All looks good regardless. Been too dry here to assess anything except drought management which I've been pleased with. Got some rain week ago but need much more. EHD has been hitting pretty hard last few months thru the state. Hard freeze tonight hopefully will bring that to an end. Good luck with your season. Always enjoy this thread and its 'maters.
My COOP where I get my seed rarely keeps anything in stock so I asked them to order me some oats back in the summer. They never tell me prices up front and when they came in it was BFO and if I remember correctly they were right around $30 a 50...I planted them back in mid August and we didn't get rain for 1.5 months but they popped up with what little soil moisture there was. Deer have been keeping them pretty short so far...

This is my first time to plant, and I did place them in the better spots of the plot. Seed is clean and looks healthy. I got good germination from all seed planted (feed oats, feed wheat, 3-way mix, and BFO), and all plots are being grazed about the same. Stay tuned!

I will pick a spot of regular oats/wheat where soil is as good as BFO spot and will try to document. Yesterday was a month in and bfo looks more vibrant, but that may be because I'm expecting them to. The area immediately adjacent is not a good test because it is an incline and rocky.

I know it is deer season but I was happy to see a group of turkeys digging the chufa patch. I rode down to check it out. Several spots like this:
I got the shovel because I wanted to see what the chufa nuts looked like. They produce a lot closer to the top than I would have thought. All these little dots in the dirt are chufa nuts, just under the thatch so easy digging for the turkeys. I used my chisel plow as the last run before planting method, and it produced some great furrows for the plants. Pleased with the results.
Food plots continue to look good, but getting hit fairly hard in some places. You can see the chisel plow furrows in the first picture.

And the nuisance Oreo Cow is back. I talked with Lawyer Owner tonight and he plans to add net wire to the fence between us.

They will sometimes paw the nuts from the ground, I have heard
They might nip it but they don’t like it and won’t browse it to death.
