Buffalo gnats

I went up to the farm this weekend.Last weekend of turkey season. Although I've lost the fire to hunt turkey, my hunting buddy still loves the hunt,so he came along. I like to scratch the ground and put in some hidey hole plots. Right on schedule the buffalo gnats showed up. Having inhaled a few pounds of the in the past, I had several head nets on hand to slow them down. The locals swear by vanilla extract as a repellent. I have not had any luck with the deet based stuff. What do you like? I bet a lot of us have stories of huge black clouds surrounding our heads. I had a turkey I shot over my shoulder once, no head net, and got lost! A very miserable 3 hours and a confrontational bull in a pasture ,with a black cloud trying to invade every orifice. I'll never forget that day.

OFF Botanicals Lotion. Vanilla works too, but we've had the lotion last longer. I'll have to try the skin-so-soft. I forgot about that. I do not remember buffalo gnats as a kid. I absolutely despise those things...

I had to look up the "buffalo gnat" as I was not familiar with that term....."black flies" ......those I know! I will have to try some of what is posted. Wife is going to give me a funny look when I start looking at avon!!!!o_Oo_Oo_Oo_O

I have only encountered them once, and once was enough. We were building a drill site back when I owned a construction company and they were awful ! Someone told me about the Avon deal and we discovered that cutting it with water made it last longer and it was just as effective. Those suckers would put knots on my head every time I visited the job.

A friend of mine lives in Louisiana and they have some kind of gnat that is terrible and will swell your eyes shut from biting. He tried a concoction of Listerine, vanilla and water. He threw some together without really measuring.... 16oz water, 3oz of listerine, and 2oz of vanilla. Said it has worked fantastic so far.

That sounds great ! They get hydrated, smell like vanilla, and they don't have bad breath !:):):)

We have a couple different types of annoying things that buzz all around your head. They try to fly in the eyes and ears. They don't bite, but the swarm will drive ya nuts. I've tried Deet, Permethrin (on a hat), herbal repellants and nothing worked. I finally decided to try the Skin-So-Soft and it helped a lot. They still buzz around, but they seem to keep their distance. There were a few days that I went out in the yard to work and forgot to put on the SSS and was instantly swarmed. I went back in, got the juice and went back out...the gnats were 90% less annoying.
I got this stuff on Amazon. It's not 100% SSS though. It also contains SPF 30. I wouldn't apply it to my hunting clothes because of the smell, but for work duds, the stuff is fine.

Do I hear banjo music in the background?:D

I know! I had to add the quotes. Almost made a joke but figured that would be a lightning rod!

I will say if you check out with four bottles and a case of beer, you will get funny looks.
