Brushpile's Tracking Pack

I have found a new friend, who will get Otto to me, and he is a very serious breeder of Kopovs. I'm also hoping he joins the forum because he has so much to offer! Meanwhile, Elkie is teaching Breeze to aerate the lawn.

Brush,
I have a passport and between jobs. Give me a call. I'd like to go back to Germany one more time for a German beer anyhow.

Not much of a difference. My wife and I went to Austria while over there to visit castles. Some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen are over there.

I took Elkie and Breeze on a track, and removed the markers... then I decided to take Heidi on a blind track. The track was a long trek across a river, and up a bluff. I started Heidi and it was off to the races! Heidi quickly completed the track and was very possessive of the deer tail at the end, carrying it all the way across and down the ridge, across the river and back to the truck.

Pause to cool down.

I don't blame her - you want a deer tail then track your own deer.

Any news on the pup from overseas?

I got an email in German the was titled "Otto goes to USA". The breeder is going on holiday on September 20th, so Otto must be gone by then, and my pet nanny is says she will make the delivery. I'm holding my breath.

Well I am looking forward to the first Otto at the Brushpile photo. I bet you and the wife are looking forward to that too.

Scotty is running in his first Hunt Test this Saturday in Rarden, Ohio which is east of Cinncinnati about an hour and 30 minutes. We will be traveling up Friday. It has been 9 months getting ready. Got two courses to run - be nice if we could bring home two passes.

Otto is on the two week clock. Come on Otto.

There is movement! On Sunday Otto will be picked up from the breeder and transported from Austria to Germany, on the first leg of his journey to America. Then the pet escort will coordinate a trip to deliver Otto in late September. Otto is now 4 months old, weighs about 8 pounds and is tracking blood.

Heidi and Breeze recovered their first deer! Heidi will be one year old toward the end of November and Breeze is 7 months. This was Heidi's and Breeze's first real deer track and there was almost no blood, so it was a transition for both of them, who kept checking back and searching for blood, before following hoof scent. Both Heidi and Breeze found their deer, and both are ready to give Elkie some much needed help.

This is Breeze.

This is Heidi.

The photo of Breeze appears like she has a distinct black stripe down her spine. So glad to see your two rookies get going.

Wonderful news on Otto's trip to American planned out. Going to be an exciting time with all those hard driving tracking dogs.

Congrats on the first deer and congrats to Elkie. Hope many tracks to follow.

Still Waiting on Otto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heidi is doing extremely well and has a high prey drive.

I expect Heidi to surpass Elkie!

Breeze tracked, but was afraid to approach this dead doe, but finally checked it out. I was not seeing the prey drive I like to see, but then Breeze is still a puppy and was initially cautious.

Breeze is a good tracker, but today she tracked slowly, looking up to see if there might be a frightening deer ahead! Breeze is still a young dog and she doesn't know what to think of a great big doe! :) I think I'll wait until next year to show breeze another deer. Thoughts on that?

Brush,

My thoughts are as a tracker - you read the dogs and have gotten good at it. If you waited two months that will help Breeze mature a great deal. Scotty is one year old today. How fast they change.

Breeze is to valuable to get in a hurry. Obviously, you don't want Breeze to encounter a live hard-horned buck yet.

Too summarize, I would not wait an entire year, I would think about 60 days with just training and reinforce her training and then see what 60 days of maturity does for her. When a dog surpasses Elkie you are in a great position.

How is the kennel working out?

Wayne

60 days takes Breeze beyond this deer season, so I will continue to train Breeze and track with her next year. Heidi and Elkie are ready, but we aren't getting many tracks yet.

The kennel will be replaced with chain link because wood warps so much in dry weather. I have another female coming from the same kennel Heidi is from. Heidi is an outstanding dog and has a sweet temperament, but a strong prey drive

So is Otto still scheduled to come to the Brushpile or has it been cancelled. I guess when the calls starting happening they will happen all at once. The additional dogs will be a huge advantage.

Based upon the timeframe, I would try to get Breeze on another track before the season closes - 2 or 3 weeks down the road. If she was having a bad day, she may show her best on the next track. We do see pups have a bad day from time to time. Scotty's training told me - if Scotty is having a bad day - load him up. He doesn't want bad habits to get a chance to develop. With Scotty I just don't run antlers as much now with no scheduled hunt test until January.

Heidi and Breeze are a work in progress. Heidi has tremendous prey drive, while Breeze is excited about the track, but would rather find a food reward than a deer. So I took Elkie and Heidi on the last track, and Heidi is about to surpass Elkie. Both dogs found the dead deer in less than 5 minutes. Both tracked the second buck over half a mile, with Heidi advancing the track beyond where Elkie lost scent. The buck was not recoverable, but both dogs tracked it to polish their skills.

Just my opinion, but Breeze will mature and get excited over the deer. Scotty was very food driven and my different trainers told me to wean him off the food rewards. I thought at the time - I just hope that is possible.

It worked itself out with age and as a handler you cut back the food rewards. Scotty just celebrated his 1 year old birthday. Breeze will make the same transition.

Heidi is an outstanding dog to be compared to Elkie. You have a great pack.

Have you ever been to Perryvillle, MO - that was the campground I stayed at this week and hunting Kaskaskia Island in the edge of Illinois. Perryville is 34 miles north of Camp Girardeau, MO.

Breeze might become my best tracker, she excels on practice tracks, and her grandfather is a 2X National Champ that was exceptional because he passed his ablity to his off spring. Food reward is used to develop prey drive. To develop prey drive I use deer parts such as liver, heart or meat, plus a deer hoof. When my dogs find a deer they chew just like a coyote would! If I had enough deer meat I would feed each dog some daily.
