BP - Property Tour

I bought a foam marker for my sprayer so I could see where I have already sprayed. Worked pretty well!

Pretty happy with how the no till cowpeas/millet/sunflowers/sun hemp are coming up:

The sprayer did its job too:

Not sure if I ever talked about the runway we had built last year. Property owner is a former Air Force pilot and has a couple of small planes. 100 loads of dirt was brought in, then I no tilled Pensacola Bahia. I tell you what...Bahia is a pain in the neck! If I don't now it every week it bogs up the bush hog. Sure looks nice though:

You are right. Bahia grows two inches the night after being cut. And what a sweet smell when curing for hay.

Believe it or not, deer season starts here next week. I will be in the stand Tuesday (August 15) morning and afternoon. Headed down to the farm today to keep getting stands ready.

It was a very wet week:

This is one of the new Millenium L360 stands I set up. I probably won't sit there until the rut.

I mowed 4 rows of corn to create a shooting lane. There is now a lot of corn on the ground that I think will draw the deer in:

Found my first rub of the year as well:

Place looks great. Can't imagine getting to hunt already. Cool. Not sure how anyone stays married in that state with that long of a season.:)

Wow...August 15th opener...looks like at least 1 is out of velvet there. The bucks in our area start losing velvet around September 1st and that is the same time the unofficial .22 mag season begins and you can even unofficially use a light from a vehicle apparently...I have never partaken of this season because apparently the wardens aren't aware of this unnofficial early season

My family used to meet another in myrtle beach late July. All the buzz was about deed season, some Aug 1. I could not get used to it

This is early for our bucks to be shedding velvet. Usually 1 or 2 big boys sheds right around opening day, but the vast majority of bucks wait until early September. I think I have 2 with hard antlers now, and that doesn't include 1 or 2 real big boys that haven't been on camera this year (but I think are still around).

I honestly haven't gotten any of the only two bucks I would shoot. The first buck is one I watched for 4 seasons, and I know he survived last year (and I found both of his sheds in February/March). I see no reason why he would have left the property, but I think he doesn't like the new feeder I set up.

The second buck was a big 8 pointer last year. I had pics of him up through June, then the pics stopped. He's also been on the property for many years, so I think he just became a loner this summer and shifted his range. When the first scrapes appear I will set up a camera and hopefully get updated pics.

We used to have a grass airstrip as well. BIL had a piper cub that he flew. He called it a plane......I called it a kite with a lawn mower engine! When he bought it he flew it to our place.......from FLORIDA! Took him like 3 days. He lost the plane in the divorce and sold us his 1/2 of the farm......air strip is long gone and is in soybeans right now. I did end up with a really nice morton building in the deal.

cutman...Most of us guys in the southeast that know of your Aug 15th opening day wonder how you handle the heat. Seems the opening date for SC has been the same for many, many years. You'll have to give us a "live from the tree" update on opening day. Place looks great. Love the mowed strips of corn.

Your corn is already done growing?

Yep. Farmers are already combining it around here. We typically plant in late March...this year many farmers planted in early March because February was so warm. Mine went in the ground March 27 I think.

What happens with the fields after they're harvested? Do they plow them and leave 'em? Cover crop? Double crop?

Lots of farmers will plow them under then plant a fall crop. Others will leave them fallow over the winter. My corn won't be harvested. I'll bush hog it throughout the season for the deer and hopefully to get some doves, then I'll no till some rye into the stubble.

No signs of drying corn here....still green and growing the ears! I can't mow mine - considered baiting in my state. I have to mow lanes before it produces the ear or I can be in big trouble. Always interesting to see how the difference in latitude can affect the timing of things. The other big difference is that opener......Aug 15th! Man that has to be hot. My statewide opener isn't until Oct 1st and it's still plenty warm then in most years.
