BP - Property Tour

Youve got some south carolina soil doing its thing. Looking good. Tell us more about water hole.

The water hole was dug 20+ years ago when we needed dirt to fix the roads. It's maybe 20 x 15 yards and 6-12 feet deep. It's got a good clay base so holds water pretty well.

My dad put water hyacinth in it years ago without realizing how invasive it is. I aim to eradicate the terrible plant. I couldn't spray the center of the pond, but I have a pond rake that will probably reach it.

Pond looks a little better after herbicide + 5+ inches of rain:

This .4 acre plot of corn is the happiest corn I've ever seen. It's over 10 feet tall now:

Aquatic Glyphosate (53% solution I think) at 16 oz in 10 gallons of water. I also added 8 oz of crop oil. There are instructions in the label for spot spraying.

I sprayed it with an ATV sprayer at about 65 psi. I drove around the pond in my trusty 5 wheeler and sprayed everything I could reach. Not sure how I'm going to get the plants in the center.

I am going to spray next week with Shore Klear 17% glyphosate. Spraying with my atv first and 2 weeks later I am putting my atv sprayer in my boat to get to the rest. My middle is clear of vegetation. I was going to use the same mix ratio you did. Your corn looks really good.

Looks like my glyphosate is much more concentrated than yours, so plan accordingly.

What are you trying to kill in your pond?

I am guessing it is the lack of surfactant? The generic stuff I buy at TSC has surfactant added. I "heard" it will kill cattails pretty well and not fish. I would try to keep runoff the plants to a minimum if I were to try it.;)

Didn't get to do as much as I wanted today because my idiot dog got into rat poison (second time this year). I spent 3 hours at the emergency vet lavaging his stomach. I think we got all of it, but he ate roughly 10x the fatal dose, so the next 48 hours are going to be nerve racking. This poison was not supposed to be there...I think a raccoon got into the shed, played/opened the 5 lb bucket, then left it on the ground.

Anyway, I mowed the grass, bush hogged a field, checked trail cams, and took pics of my corn.

Cutman...Hope all goes well with your dog brother. Place looks fantastic! Thanks for taking the time to post your updates.

Dog survived his second rat bait incident. Got back to the farm today and guess what the first thing he looked for was? You got it...rat bait. Dummy.

We had our second major rain event of the last two weeks over the last 3 days. This has all fallen since Monday:

Needless to say, I couldn't do much with everything being so soggy. I did go check on my pear orchard.

I've been puttering along all summer doing regular maintenance chores like mowing. Deer season starts in less than a month (August 15) so it's time to start getting serious!

I never got around to planting my summer mix this year because the arrowleaf clover I mixed in with my cover crop was so successful. I figured it was stupid to terminate a good food source only to plant another food source.

With the clover finally dying recently I decided to plant a mix of cowpeas, sun hemp, sunflowers, and millet. I expect the deer to destroy the good stuff and leave the millet for the birds. My drill has never been so full:

This is what I was planting into:

Unfortunately, a severe thunderstorm developed when I was only 2.5 acres into a 6 acre planting. I had to take cover. It dropped about .4" in 15 minutes, which was enough to completely screw up the soil conditions for my no till planting. It made the ground too soft and the previous dry clover residue too pliable. I had trouble with hair pinning and controlling seed depth. Nevertheless I decided to keep planting and hope for the best. Originally I intended to spray everything after planting, but that was out after the rain. I will rush down Saturday after work and spray then if nothing has germinated yet.

Other random pics. Had to redo this plumbing job because air was getting in the pipes:

Corn is starting to dry down:

This is a spot on the property that we call "the burrow pit" because dirt was taken from it to build up the road system. It has historically been wet, but several years of drought allowed all sorts of stuff to grow. Now we've had several wet years and the vegetation is completely different.

You have been busy....or at least tying to be. You have corn drying down and we have corn just staring to silk! Corn and pears look good.

My lab mix loves rat bait as well for some stupid reason. Glad the dog made it.

I had a plumbing job as well. The condensate trap from my furnace/Ac unit plugged and the drip pan filled and then leaked all over the floor and into the basement. I was surprised at the amount of water that comes off that with the humid summer air. My kids claimed I was getting high because of the PVC primer/glue!!!
