Big game hunt for 15 year old

I have a phone number you need if you want to hunt S Texas for javies. Success rate is high. Bow or firearm, and a chance for hogs too. Got a phone number for cow elk in NM too, but that one ended pretty quickly. Four of us went. To quote John Belushi, " We came, we saw, we kicked ass !"

But.....my choice would be an antelope hunt in Wyoming, if he can take a week off from school. Most hunting seasons are gonna interfere with school days, except maybe the javi hunt. Might get that during spring break. The only other option would be during Xmas holidays. Good luck !
That's great. Can you pm me the number for South Texas Javelin hunt. I'd like to line up some options and let him choose.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.

If you are looking into something with a high success rate and different type of hunt you should look into a spring or fall bear hunt in Canada. Something totally different than what you have done with a very high success rate. Can be something as simple as a fully guided to a DIY hunt once you arrive in camp. If you are interested I have contacts with an excellent camp in Manitoba for spring and in Ontario for the fall. Has taken many trips to find these two diamonds.
I've thought about bear hunts. Interestingly I was scheduled to do a bear hunt in Alberta 15 years ago. Then my wife told me she was pregnant and due the same week in May that I was to be on the bear hunt. Well, that was Jackson. I almost named him Bear as it was the only way I'd get my bear that year.
I'd love to take him on a bear hunt but the air fare, lodging and guide cost would probably be out of my budget.
Wisconsin has bears. Lots of them too. Do you ever hunt bear in Wisconsin ?

I had pretty much ruled out elk but a cow elk may be a possibility. New Mexico has a draw system. Non residents have a 6% opportunity (I think). We can throw his name in the hat I suppose. Great suggestion!

We hunted with an outfitter and drew easily with that advantage. Hunted one of Ted Turner's ranches near Raton, NM. Kiowa Creek Outfitters, I think. Tim Barraclough is his name. Three day hunt, 100% opportunity at cow elk. It's a motel hunt, stayed at the Holiday Inn in Raton. Like I said, we killed out the first day. Mine weighed 480 on the hoof, the smallest was 320. Lots of delicious venison !

There was a outfitter on a TX exotics FB page that had javelina/hog combos for $750 that I was looking at. I would say you could be under 1500 and stay on this side of the Rio!

My only two "big" game hunts out of state have been hogs in north TX and antelope in WY.

The fall DIY hunt in Ontario is not very costly. He takes care of the baiting until you get there then you are on your own. Makes it a lot more fun in my opinion. I believe he is at or very near 100% success rate for bear kills. This is the 5th camp I have hunted out of in Ontario and is by far the best one. If he would change jobs I would quit going. To many crappy guides up there that dont do a good enough job. Not willing to wade the crap to find a good one again.

Wisconsin does have bears in areas of the state. One of the problems is in my area it takes 8-9 years to get a tag. Some areas up to 12 years. Then you have to worry about other people putting a bait in close to yours, dumping gas on your bait to shut it down, driving by honking the horn. Plus when all is said and done if you hire a guide in WI or do it yourself the cost comes out to about the same as a trip to Canada with none of the worries.

I actually have a WI tag that opens on Wednesday. I was way more excited when I headed to Canada in two weeks ago than I am now.

Which of your two hunts did you enjoy the most ?

The hog hunt in TX is the only guided hunt I have ever done. Interesting to hang out on a huge TX ranch and see how it is done in other states. We landed on a good hunt but from the sounds of it there are plenty of shady hog hunts out there. The Antelope I have went twice - once with only doe tags and the other that year they had all the huge snow. We were successful with the does but struck out the year we had buck tags. The unit we were in you hunt public land more than the animals. Map reading was very important (less so now with things like On X). If I was taking my kid (which I will in a few years) I think I would start with the pigs.

A cow elk is alot bigger than a javi, or a hog.I have hunted a guided in alot of states over the years.I guess deciding bow or gun is first decision

What could one expect to pay for a 3 day cow elk hunt?

Probably $1200 neighborhood now. That included picking us up at the motel, guiding, and bringing the elk back to a processor. Motel stay and meals was on us, but it's still the closest I've ever came to making a hunt pay off in meat. My local deer cost me more per pound than that cow did.

As I said, it was short and sweet, but it was a good trip with two friends and my then 16 year old son. Turner's ranch was really nice, and to see the guides take some of the organs from the elk to keep for the biologist and the facility to weigh and process the elk was a new thing for us. Electric hoist with scales, pulling the "ivories" to determine age, etc. were all interesting.

One thing stands out. With four elk to bring home, and none of us ever having killed an elk, we didn't have a clue how much meat we had to bring home. We literally bought every ice chest of any size in Raton. That was in addition to the ones we brought. I was driving an Excursion at the time so we pulled a single axle trailer for the ice chests. Damn good thing we did !

I would go out west. My son is only 11 and is begging me to take him. One day I will take him on an elk or mule deer hunt in Colorado.

Saw on bowsite t hey had a bear hunt in NB for the fall on special.NM offers some great youth hunt opportunities

I'm just now looking at this thread and notice you show some interest in a javi hunt in Mexico. I own a ranch in Coahuila along the Rio Grande River and have been spending the winters there since the 80's. If you get serious about that opportunity I can offer a lot of guidance .

You should see lots of javi's daily, plus be in a wildlife wonderland the likes of which most will never see accepting those that go to Africa. Let me know if I can help. And BTW ...some of the biggest whitetails anywhere live in the vast brush country along the Rio Grande River.
