Best place to buy grafting rootstock?

You can do it upon receiving the root stock which is generally referred to as bench grafting (as you can do it setting at a table or standing at a :D) or as dogdoc mentioned you can plant that rootstock allow it to grow to a whatever size you like and then graft your scion onto it while in the ground (called top working). Everybody develops a preference on how they do things and often through trial and error to see what works best for them in their situation. Only time you really cant graft with any success is when the root stock is in complete dormancy, because your scion will dry out before the callus forms.

If you get some pear rootstock won let me know I'll hook you up with pear scions, if you graft your trees and they don't take plant them out anyway I like to t bud in Aug the ones that didn't take

Turkey Creek,

You and I had agreed that you would ship me some pear rootstock. It will be dormant when you ship. I am adding a walk in cooler.

Can I get some pear scions and put them in the walk in cooler until I get your rootstock and then graft? I am in Zone 7a on the TN / KY state line in middle TN.

Thanks for your assistance.

wbp they should be fine but don't cut your scions til mid January or early February, i store mine with a little moisture either paper towels or newspaper, but you don't need them to get moldy so I wring mine out really well. If you want if I have a little extra I'll send you some scions. Just tell me what you may be wanting or how many your looking for.

Neahawg

Two points on what I want: 1) variety on drop time and 2) disease resistance.

Let me talk to Turkey Creek and I will let you know numbers. Thanks for the help. ;)

Will be my first attempt to graft anything. I am going to try persimmons and get those scions from DogDoc. Pear rootstock will come from Turkey Creek.

I'll have a few, for you just remind me, I think for sure I'll have some from warren, seckle, magness, and harrow delight, and normally get two sticks from the USDA and only need 1 so may be some extra from order there, Ilalso should have Ayers, Moonglow, and keifer.

As Neahawg said I wouldnt cut scion wood yet. He probably has a better handle on when for your growing zone. Normally I dont cut scion wood until late February here.

I'll probably cut mine towards the middle of February on a clear sunny day, that's when we normally spray dormant oil and prune. Though I had one pear last year that must be a early bloomer because it was already blooming by late February last year.

Chris,
I have a tree order with you already and I'm looking for some rootstock as well; around 24. I am interested in some B118 but also some G890. Any chance you could get me some G890? G890 is supposed to produce a bigger tree than the 935.

I think I might be able to come up with a few B118 for you. Probably too late on the G890, I can check to see if I can get any yet. When I ordered my G935 a couple months ago they told me that they might be able to come up with 50. I might order some G890 to trial next year, if I do I will let you know. The Geneva root stocks you almost have to order a year in advance to be guaranteed some.

Hey guys in case anybody is still reading this post I cant get anymore root stock added to my order for this spring.

Read your post Turkey Creek.

Did you still have me on the list to get some root stock for pear grafting? We had traded private messages earlier in the year.

Just checking back.
