Bench Grafting

Well we definitely did more then I think we realized this year. When I got Arkansas beauty I added a few rootstocks to our order and then Merle did the same after he found Tull. All total I think we grafted around 60 trees.

The planting part can where you down but we can do it in spells just digging a few at a time. Then mine can be moved in the fall since they are in rootmaker pots.

I didn't realize these bench grafts were so "random" at when they start budding out. I have some with 2 or 3 inches of growth and others that you can just barely tell are starting to bud. It's been almost a month since they were grafted. It seems that apples in general are much later than crabapples. Here are a coupled my crabapples doing well so far:

Here are my bench grafting results...it took some almost four weeks to bud out....
I plan to pant these this fall. Right now they are in root pouch bags.

Puggernut Crabapple (Fish) 4/4
Golden Hornet Crabapple (GRIN) 2/2
Ralph Shay Crabapple (GRIN) 1/1
Lemon Drop Crabapple (Fish) 6/7
September Sun Crabapple (Fish) 1/3
Centurion Crabapple (GRIN) 1/1
Kerr Crabapple (GRIN) 0/1
Centennial Crabapple (GRIN) 1/2
Terry Winter Apple (local) 1/1
Bradley's Seedling Apple (local) 1/1
Limbertwig Apple (local) 1/1
TOTAL 19/24

I'd say 19 for 24 is darn good. If you have scions still available don't be afraid to regraft now. I have 3 i regrafted 2 weeks ago and they are already showing good growth.

I'm going to have to revise my list. The Kerr crabapple is now budding out...6 1/2 weeks after grafting. This is amazing how random these grafts take and grow. That makes it 20/24 total.

Here's a shot of the whole bunch.

My new crabapple and apple grafts have grown well...at least most of them. I still have 3 or 4 that haven't grown much at all. I'll plant the bigger ones in the field this fall. The smaller ones I'll keep in pots and see what happens next season.
