Bear hunting?

Scored 600lbs of individual microwave brownies for .08 a pound, a little bit a work but not to bad when you get the assembly line going. Family and friends that bear bait together...stay together!

9 days till baiting season kicks off.

Went to Manitoba several years ago and shot a decent black bear with my bow. Might shoot another one someday, but have other critters higher on the list now. Thats a lot of brownies!

Good score. Just be careful if you have small cubs hitting bait as too much chocolate can kill smaller cubs.
I will only have 10 gallons of these brownies out per site mixed with my other bait plus 20% are oatmeal brownies with no chocolate.

Twolftg, That looks like a lot of work! Have you tried, lucky 7 bair bait? I think they have pretty reasonable prices. They sell in bulk and small quantities, and have a good assortment of different baits. They are good people to deal with, to boot!

Yeah it was work but what does a guy have wife and kids for anyway? I do go to lucky 7 but these were close to home about 5 miles opposed to 60 miles and saved me about .10 a pound.

I was just wondering if you knew of them. That's where I go. I buy the trail mix by the barrel. also got gummy bears (great smell), peeps, chocolate covered peanuts, and a couple gallons of liquid smoke, all for about $110.

Did you buy for this year, I know they want $85 for a barrel. I got 6 barrels for 280, and sold a couple for 190. Worked out slick for me.

Just one sight. In the past I have just dug a hole and covered with logs and put in a pretty good amount of bait every 4-5 days, as I have to play the weekend worrior thingy till I retire. However this year I am useing a berrel so the coons dont clean me out and to conserve on the bait. My barrel has small one inch holes drilled in it at the top so a bear has too tip it over to get the bait to (trickle) out. When the bait gets low the bear will have to roll the berrel around to get more bait. We will see how that works or not. Every time I rebait I leave a little goodie for them, and I make sure they here me come and go. Then when it is time to hunt my wife drops me off and leaves. One year it only took 15 minutes fir a bear to show. I used to bait with everthing under the sun. Meat scraps, resterant grease, and a ton of sweats. I got a few bears through the years but I suspect I Gave them a belly ache more than anything becouse some years they would just stop comeing to the bait for no apparent reason. I have not had that happen with the trail mix. Last year I had multipal bears comeing in during daylight hours. However I was after one particular bear. he never showed. I think he probably has played this game befor!!!
How do you bait? Did you get your bow fixed yet?

This year between me and my friend we are running 4 sites, when I have had bait on private land I have used a barrel, I have one spot on the land I hunt for a bait site but I am not sure if i am going to this year, I think it gets too much traffic human wise and puts the bears in night mode. My public woods sites I look for a slight depression or mound to use as a back and cut all the logs to cover. My base bait is trail mix as well, I like how well it holds up on the rain. I also throw in some sweets, this year brownies, and dump my grease around the site. Definitely nothing ground breaking here.

Bear baiting in Minnesota is under way, I have always wanted to try filming a hunt, so I started making a video at the spot in feel I most likely will end up hunting. I will post a link later but it was a long day trying to film adds to the work that's for sure. But for now here is a picture of one of my baits. 100 yards off a stream back up against a pile of deadfall. You could go over 5 miles north or west and not cross a road, and we are 500 yards off the minimum maintenance road we came in on. Road is not getting much use its probably 2 miles back on that road and we needed to clear 5 different trees blown over the road.received_10157381811155397.jpeg

Holehopper is the lid for your barrel bolted on or just the clip that came with barrel? A bear will start working that clip and the barrel will be open. One good smash by a large bear and that cover is off.

Thanks for the advice. This is a first with a barrel for me. If I get a large bear in and it happens to get the lid off thats ok with me. I will just bolt it on when I rebait if I have too. In the mean time the majority of the bait is protected from the coons and skunks.

Looking really good twolfg!

Took 6 days for one to find it. Should pick up now. Looks to be a pretty good bear. The lid stayed on so far. He was batting that barrel around pretty good by the looks of the pics. Let the wrestling match begin!....
