Apple trees from cuttings?

Mark, you might also want to try air layering. It should produce roots faster, and the success rate should be higher. You can buy air layering pots made just for this, or you can create your own from plastic containers. I think there are some good videos out there on this too. Either way, let us know how it works for you and good luck....

I collect seed from apple,pear . Put it in a sandwich bag with a wet paper towel in the fridge and check it in the spring for sprouts ,trans plant into pots . In the second spring you may have enough size to graft scions onto. You have nothing to lose by trying. Remember, you don't plant trees for you, but for those who follow.

I tried it. I got leaf out, but after a week or two the leaves on the cuttings died. I checked and didn’t get any roots despite using hormone.

If I were to try such a thing,I would plant at least 25 cuttings and be happy if one survived. Also I would use a tent of some sort to control drying out. My 2 cents.

I've rooted m111 dormant hardwood cuttings by just sticking them in the row where I planted my bench grafts. If I were going to try it again, I would take 5" dormant cuttings, wound the base, dip them in a 3000ppm IBA hormone and I would stick them in a cold frame. I would use 50% sand and 50% peatmoss as a medium. After sticking them, I would drench them with a fungicide. The whole thing would need to be covered with plastic or glass. I would contact David at Century Farm Orchards today. He is still showing apple and pear rootstock available.

My departed nurseryman father in law, had a misting bed he used to propagate just about everything. Depending on your needs, it might be worth looking into.
