Any dove hunters?

Dove season opens today here in Oklahoma and I have my dad's old Remington Sportsman 58 in 20 gauge I inherited from him and since I have seed all over the ground that has not germinated I plan to try my hand at dove hunting our plots at Home 10 this evening. Only been actual dove hunting once many, many years ago and we only saw a couple. I saw about 15 yesterday on the plots...

Any of the rest of you going to chase any doves?

Used to hunt them much more than I do now. Perfect size meat for shiskabobs! It used to be the only season to hunt in early September. Now archery deer opens on the 1st and early teal season opens a week from saturday. Unfortunately a stupid south wind takes out 90% of my stand locations, just because the way our family farm lies. This morning there was 0 wind so I chose not to got educate deer right from the start. Tonight with the south wind I will hunt a stand that typically doesnt produce till the rut, but it beats setting at home! I will likely put a dove hunt together for the weekend. Saw a pile of doves a couple of weeks ago, havent checked that spot since then.

Yea...I hear you on the deer opener. I wouldn't even be thinking about dove hunting if our deer opener was today...for that matter I wouldn't hunt doves on our plots on our 80 because I wouldn't want to pressure the deer out. The plots I am going to hunt for dove are over on what we call "Home 10" which is the property we own and lived on until we moved onto our 80 acres. It's one of those places that shooting doves affects the deer in no way at all...plots are 75 yards from the house in the front yard basically and I have lots of toys that make loud noises. I shot an armadillo there yesterday with my .40 and the deer that were within sight never even looked up from what they were doing...

I plan on getting out on some public dove fields near my farm this weekend. Everyone be safe.....

Definitely looking forward to the opener this Saturday. Have a pile of dove right now but need this storm to head back out to sea quick. It's not a dove opener without the threat of rain though.

Love dove hunting! One of my favorite times of yr. May even like it as much or more than bowhunting (hope I don't get kicked off the site for that comment). :)

Had a great evening! Had to go to "Home 10" to put new tires we bought on our camper because we are getting ready to take it to the deer lease for the fall and the old tires were weather cracked.

I had planted the plots over there almost 2 weeks ago and since we haven't had any rain except 1/16th of an inch today the WR and wheat seed is exposed all over the plot and is attracting a few doves. I saw several while I was doing tire work but they flew off before I could get out there with dads old shotgun...

I ended up killing 2 that were flying by with the only 3 shots I have ever fired with my late fathers old shotgun...

That is a beautiful shotgun.

I love dove hunting and I love eating dove. Debone the breast into two small chunks of meat and wrap with bacon with a slice of jalapeno and cream cheese in the middle. We love them.

Unfortunately, no shotgun for me for a while!

Good Luck!

What is this Rain you speak of? Can you describe it? Sometimes the sky's leak a little bit where we live but I am pretty sure I wouldn't call it rain :(

I may have to make it an annual deal. I never really had a dove gun until my father passed away. All "Shotgun sports" have been done with my Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag turkey gun and to tell you the truth I really only like to shoot that gun at Turkeys. Hunting dove is a "fun" hunt without pressure. I need to get my grandsons into it when they get a bit older :)

Thanks Todd...when I got it out of the safe to take dove hunting yesterday I didn't even know if it would shoot. I know when I picked it up at my Mom's it was fully loaded just like all of dad's guns always were so I hoped that was a good sign... funny story...night before last I got it out and noticed it only had 2 shells in the magazine and would take no more. With one in the chamber it was only 3 shots which I thought odd for a semi auto but I figured it was plugged because dad liked to use it to hunt rabbits at the Waterfowl Management Areas. I took it apart and could not identify a plug and I read online that that model was a 3 shot shotgun...weird...

The preparation you described above sounds great! We will have to give that a try!

I feared you wouldn't be able to use a shotgun for a bit with that shoulder...hope it is healing up great!

My kids and one of their buddy's had a blast this morning. Not a lot of birds around, but enough for them to squeeze the trigger a few times.

Looks like some fine eating and good shooting was done this morning! I am going to give it a little go again after work...
Is school out?

Already ate the gizzards, hearts, and a couple of breasts. The rest of them will go into a dove pot pie.

My older kid is a good shot. He got most of them with less than a box of shells. The youngest uses the bb gun and is great at shooting sunflowers:) The neighbor kid doesn't shoot (this was his first hunt ever) but wanted to hold a gun for the pic. I'm just there for backup and to finish off cripples.

We have a 4 day school week. No classes on Fridays!

Did you get to hunt this morning?

That's exactly the recipe I have.

I have like a 7 day work week (5 mandatory and 2 I inflict upon myself) so unfortunately no dove hunting this morning. I would like to do a morning hunt though but not sure when I can squeeze that in... I have a couple hours after work to give it a try!

4 day school week...boy times have sure changed...

Is that a KS thing or just your school district? Is that for the entire school year?

I like the kids camo I bet that actually blends nicely in an open field.

It's a district thing. Several yrs ago the State started cutting school finance budgets and money got tight for districts. Several districts around us started cutting positions and extracurricular programs. Music, Art, Metal shop, Ag mechanics, sports, and anything deemed not essential to the State Assessments were considered for cuts or elimination. Our district didn't want to close opportunities for kids and started looking for other avenues. We are very rural and that means a huge cost in bus routes. We have students from an average of 5 different towns and busing them is extremely expensive. Gravel roads and tons of miles in general were eating up a lot of money in drivers, fuel, and maintenance. Cutting a day out of busing, lunches, and utilities each week added up to a pretty good cost savings. Time was added to each day, lunch period was shortened, passing between classes was shortened, spring break was eliminated, and the start back to school after summer was moved up.

We currently have well over the State minimum of school days and contact hours with students. Assessments improved. And kids who do sports actually miss less instruction time due to Friday games (because they now don't miss class for competitions). Overall it's been a great thing for the students and district.

Kubota, you seem to work 25hrs a day! I'll pay for the morning hunt tonight. I still have lots of work to do this weekend, I just get to shift it around. Morning hunt = late night.

The camo is homemade. The darn kids are invisible when they sit down with it. A lot of people don't think you need good camo to shoot doves but I have it for the kids. It really helps their shooting percentage as they never have to shoot at a flaring or spooked bird. They can take their time to get a bead on one and squeeze the trigger at just the right time. Lots of fun!

Sorry for the long post. Turkey seemed interested so blame him :)

I believe spring break, fall break, etc...are things that came about after I left the school system as when I went to school we started school in August and were off for Thanksgiving and then we were off the day before Christmas through New Years day and then we got out in May for the end of the school year. They added all these additional days off since I went to school.

Shot 11 on my first outing. They hit this public field pretty hard yesterday. Guys I spoke to said it was on fire yesterday. Still fun.
