Zone 6b, seems to grow mainly in mature timber in full shade. The deer browse every plant. The plants along this spring look like someone cut them with hedge clippers.IMG_2115.JPGIMG_2113.JPG

I'm beginning to think my deer population may be a little out of control. I've never seen browsing pressure like this. I've also never owned land and probably never paid attention.

I have 7 trail cameras out, hopefully that will give me a good idea on the deer density.

I’m collecting the seeds to start some plants for my farm- they are strange in that you have to close your hand around the pods quickly, because they explode, flinging their seeds several feet.

Where I grew up back in the 1970s, we had a low deer population and jewel weed was heavily browsed.
It's deer candy.

Ok, good to know. In addition to the jewel weed the deer heavily browse every pokeweed plant on the property and thousands of poplar stump sprouts.

It's hard work to find an apple under one of the trees and the same for acorns.

2 "weeds" that I pull down to browse height so deer can feed on them at this time of the year are poke weed and tree of heaven. Every single leaf will be eaten within a day or 2
