ANOTHER DRY YEAR?

We got an inch or more in the mountains Friday night. A good stop to the mainly dry month of May. More rain in the 7 day forecast.

Still getting nearly daily rainfall in NE Oklahoma so far. I have several jobs I can’t get to so I am traveling right now. I am up in SD right now and they are in a very dry period here...

Any updates on your current drought situation? There's a sizeable system moving east out of Texas...

We had a nice cool snap that came through and bought us a little time. Good chances of rain from this Wednesday through early next week. If we get rain I think my field corn will make, but my sweet corn will only produce in the areas I set up sprinklers.

I planted 9 acres of plots this weekend into 100% dust. I now know what farmers feel like in the Sahara desert.

Two tractors, multiple bush hogs, disks, planters, spreaders, sprayers, pumps, etc. Tens of thousands of dollars worth of farming equipment - and it is so wet, the only thing I can get in the field is the polaris ranger. Hopefully, the seed wont rot in the mud

Lawn has never looked worse up here in WI.....not to mention we got a hard frost on 5/27 got down into mid-20s....the corn just loved that. Heard guys losing the whole planting, as we had warm early May so farmers were eager to put crops in ground. Luckily, Apple trees had mostly been done blooming, but we went about first 15 days of May w/o rain and April was nearly nothing. praying it turns around.

It's hard to believe, and it's also why I rarely complain about too much rain, but the umbrella seems to have opened up over us the past couple of weeks. Another week and I might have to begin watering the pear trees I planted at the Massey in March. A quick couple questions about watering trees: I'm pretty sure the deeper subsoil moisture is still good, we got a lot of rain in April and the first 3 weeks of May after all, and lot of them good soaking rains. When do you guys begin watering newly planted trees? I know it's good for the trees to sink roots deep to reach that water, and I'd rather not promote surface root growth until completely necessary. Also, I've always stopped watering trees 3 years after planting no matter how dry it gets, is that wise?

I only water new trees the first summer. My observation is that if newly planted bare root trees leaf out they have a good chance of making it, but if they don't, they most commonly fail in the middle of the first summer when it get's hot and dry. I always thought that not watering new trees so they root deeper is a myth, if the question is to water or not to water, you can't go wrong in watering new trees (within reason). Watering trees the second and third summer will help them grow but isn't necessary for them to survive.

well since 5/29 soybean fields planting date had .15" of rain since then and 85+ degree weather every day....thinking i'll be replanting come fall, as normally we are lucky to have 5-10 days all summer that hit 90 and going to have 20+ before even get to July. eek hopefully others are getting the rainfall.

Don't write those beans off yet, soybeans take hot and dry weather in stride. The only thing that will doom them is if deer are grazing small plants hard during this dry spell.

Someone has been doing a rain dance…. I’m guessing we got 3” in a couple hours. Two 24” culverts aren’t diverting the water….. I’m hoping the 2 acre beaver pond a couple hundred yards upstream holds, and the 9 acres of corn I just planted survives the deluge. And there’s more rain in the forecast.C2CD47AB-A263-4B01-B712-8DA1964D56B5.jpeg

Yeah we have turned a corner around here as well. Received 9/10” a couple days ago and this is the last 24 hours around the farm.

Town 10 miles north received 7” last night and that was early in the evening who knows where they will be after the rains today.

Just saw the town north of us I was talking about advice received 9.10” overnight. The river I live next to is out of it’s banks over our road so might have a day off who knows! This is the river trying to get backed up into my pond behind my house. Feast or famine..

What app do you have there that shows your past rainfall?

I was supposed to be small mouth fishing the Rappahannock today and tomorrow but they cancelled on us because of flash flooding. I’ve gotten 2.3” as of right now since midnight and another 1.5” before midnight

We have a slight chance at some rain this evening and tomorrow afternoon, then after that it's hot, dry, and humid for the foreseeable future. The encouraging thing is the humidity staying high. It doesn't make for pleasant days, but around here, when the humidity drops for long periods in the summer, that means trouble.

That's a bummer. I wouldn't want to be on the Rappahannock right now with all this water.

It would have been an adventure for sure. Probably would have turned a two day float into a half day tho. Up to 5.6” of rain today

Updated rain total

So much for our last chance for rain for a while. Not looking good. Lots of beans going in the ground right now that are just going to set there for a while.
