Alfalfa/Clover

Has anyone in Ohio started planting alfalfa/clover yet. Like to get seed in the ground but afraid it's still to early for a late frost

I have a 4+ yo alfalfa/clover/chicory plot. My first question, and I assume you have already done your homework on that good soil, is what are your ph and soil tests? And what was the plot before this transition?? I won't bore you with my thots dependent on you answer. But quick hint, I would start that plot in the late summer dependent on your answers. My fav plot for dry weather I will say that, and is not all the drama many like to make alfalfa .

Ph was 6.6,last year had soybeans in it. I frosted seeded alfalfa/clover last year it did really good this year was really warm in Ohio so I wasn't able to frost seed this year

Meant to say I frost seeded in a different plot last year

In a clean plot, such as bean stubble, I would get clover down ASAP. I've always told alfalfa doesn't frost seed well, but I've never tried.

In a alfalfa plot that is not a monoculture such as you have, I have found overseeding late march with the alfalfa and clover and I add chicory to do quite well. Especially if done before a rain, but the ground is pretty soupy at this time and should do well. I don't use RR alfalfa so I don't know if that might make a diff. You could add some WR as a cover crop with it and it will die off midsummer. You should post some pics, sounds like a great plot. I also find adding Boron per soil test really helps alfalfa. Good luck.

I have the ground disc up pretty good I will post pictures as the year goes by the ,15 day forecast for my part Ohio is mid 50s to 70s in the day with just a couple nights at 32-33

I frost seeded some a couple weeks back bub. I'm not sure how it took yet but hoping I'll notice this spring.

Side question. Will geese eat seed?

YES they will, so will turkeys. My cousin had a woods plot planted where he tried throw and mow rye and radish. Came back 3 days later and plot was scratched clean from turkeys.

What size planting? Field hunting geese i've learned they do not want to be near trees or any brush that could hide a predator.

Well plot is doing good can anyone recommend a good fertilizer for alfalfa, chicory and clover to give it a boost

Use your soil test if you have one. I use 0-20-20. Typically need least amount of N to prevent grasses unless you are low on that. Mine also calls for 1# Boron/ac so I add that by way of Borax bought at Dollar General about 3$ for 4 # box. I pour about half of box in with fert and spread once a year. You can get fert mix with Boron in it but it has N in mix also and I don't want or need that. It is .5-10-20-20
