6.5 creed/ar-15

Hello all, I was considering spending 800-900 on a new 6.5 creed x bolt. Now, I've recently gotten into hunting and have had much help on the bow hunting forumn. I have about two weeks on my gun season left and was using an old 30-30 as my primary weapon. I had a 7 mag I loved, but it burned up in a fire along with multiple weapons. The only weapons to survive were two pistols, a 30-30 and my rock river ar-15. Can I just convert my 5.56 into a creedmoor? I have a nice Nikon scope on it I used for targets at around a 100 yards. So, why waste near a grand if I can modify my ar-15 with the new 6.5 and a longer barrel? Again, I understand the theory, but can someone give me pros, cons, cheap conversion and what I'll need to do it? Again for deer

Can I use the 6.5 Grendel? How does it compare? Is it a flat flying round that can get upwards of 300 yards? Just curious. I'd like to take what I already have and make it work for less money. Thank you in advance

The Grendel would take a bolt swap, barrel, and different mags. Maybe $300 cheap end.

The grendel would not be in the same class as a creedmore. About 500 fps slower from what I have seen. I think 300 yards would be pushing it.

I was told many times to stay away from. Deer with the 223. The link isn't working, but is there an ammo that's actually decent for deer?

.223 Deer Ammunition: Federal Fusion 62gr, Federal Fusion MSR 62gr, Federal Vital Shok Nosler Partition 60gr, Federal Vital Shok Trophy Bonded 62gr, Winchester Power Point 64gr, Remington Hog Hammer 62gr, Remington Hypersonic Bonded 62gr...... There is probably some 5.56 deer ammunition, but .223 is easier to find on the shelf. Make sure it is a bonded bullet or has a picture of a deer on the box. DO NOT USE VARMINT AMMUNITION ON DEER.

I have killed deer with a .223 AR using the 62gr Federal Fusion, but think it is on the small end of the spectrum for them. Would I use it again? Sure would, but you better put the bullet where it goes, 100%. I shot a doe in the chest while she was looking straight at me to see how the bullet would perform. She ran about 30yds after the shot and fell over dead. The bullet made it into her stomach and I didn't feel like digging it out to look at it. It shredded her lungs with the energy it dumped and ripped the top of her heart off. Even though I only had an entrance and no exit, there was a very good blood trail.

There are lots of options for deer appropriate ammunition in the .223......Doc posted several that will work......pay attention to what he says and, if you chose to use the .223, wait for a broadside shot and you will likely get and exit.

Another option...

Different link for the one I posted: above, shows to be out of stock but you can get it from many other vendors.

another option if you have a 1 in 8" or faster twist barrel:

Never really been a fan of Browning rifles, but a neighbor just bought a 6.5 Creedmoor X-Bolt Hell's Canyon Speed and it is NICE. Feels good to shoulder and might be my next rifle too if it shoots as good as it looks.

The 6.8 SPC is another option in an AR-15. Same thing though, either an upper, or bolt, barrel, mag swap out. I converted a built gun into 6.8 and it's my favorite AR out of five. Never killed a deer with it. But have killed a bunch of hogs, and they die on the spot with a high shoulder shot. I use Federal Fusion ammo. The Fusion bullet is a good one. I'm not a fan of .22s for deer, even though I've killed a bunch of hogs with a .223/5.56 also. In that caliber, I use Hornady Superformance 75gr BTHP Match and shoot them in the lungs.

If you have killed a bunch of hogs with .223, don't understand why you would be afraid to shoot deer with it??

Just in case you need more testimony; my boy has shot several deer with a .223 AR and never had one go more than 30yds. The deer he shot with a .308 this yr went farther than any deer he has shot with the .223.

Pretty simple. I don't eat hogs, therefore, if they run off into the woods at night after being hit, I don't try to find them. To me, they are vermin, just like a coyote or poisonous snake. I try to kill every one I see.

I converted my main hog and coyote ARs to 6.8SPC, so I don't hunt hogs (or coyotes) with a .223/5.56 anymore. And to clarify, I'm not "afraid" to shoot a deer with a .22 centerfire, but I have much better options, so I use them.
