2020 Live from the Stand

Sorry to hear Dogghr, I’m fortunate to still have my dad around; I cringe thinking about the day I have to say goodbye. I will look forward to seeing him again one day though!

I’m sorry for your loss Dogghr. I know when it is their time it is their time and they know it. It doesn’t make it any easier though. We are all here for you buddy.

Back out this evening at the old home place. After the big nine that eluded both Audrey and me. A week ago tonight he was in front of Dawna and Audrey and her scope fogged up. Hopefully he’ll make another appearance.
Here he is the day he stayed 40 yards too far away from me.

Wind went light a variable at sundown. For me, that usually means it does the opposite of what it’s supposed to do. Sure enough, lightly easing right over to where they usually enter the big plot. Nothing for me tonight.

Saw 2 does and a fawn head into the lower barn plot at the Massey this evening. I was in a stand 400 yards away because of the wind direction. No big fellas showed up anyway. I could see acres of food close to bedding cover and only 3 deer made an appearance. We need some cold weather; but it doesn’t look like we’re gonna get it before season’s end.

At it again, I have no confidence whatsoever in seeing a deer, but who knows? Other times I’ve been supremely confident only to be mildly disappointed, so I’m trying something new — low confidence hunting. If it works, I plan to write a book on the topic and become filthy rich. Wish me luck! Then again...DON’T!!

As my late friend used to say, “Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed. “

ML season this wk. I don’t think I’ve missed going this Thursday for 30 years beginning with the old TC side hammer I still have. But had Dad in Hospice this past week and he passed yesterday. With his dementia/Alzheimer’s last 3 years I’ve not shed many tear. He’s in a better place. But certainly he was at one time my main hunting partner.
Life gets in the way sometimes so priorities are important. Good luck to all!!

So sorry about your Dad, dogghr. Can only imagine how tough this is. Prayers sent.

Thanks everyone for all the kind comments. You guys are the best!! Dad was hardcore and especially liked the trad type bows. He felt same of compound bows as lot of people these days feel toward crossbows. LOL. He shot many a buck while sitting on a limb of a tree he had climbed, long before any store bought stands were created. Old school in his hunting with believing no type of baiting including any type of food plot. He knew how to hunt those ridges looking for Edges created by the landscape and flora. I often cussed as a kid as we would always have to climb to the most God forsaken part of a ridge leaving a long ugly deer drag out to the truck. The other rule he always abided by was if he hadn't made his shot within 30 min of dark, he was headed out of the wood. No night time trailing for him. This always aggravated me as he was ready to leave and I wanted to stay, but as my life has evolved, I find myself also slowly sneaking out of the wood before complete darkness. I was a lucky man to enjoy a mostly healthy dad for most of his 90 years.
Thanks so much again guys!!

Any luck?
I took a shot and made what looked like a good hit on a buck I’ve said all along I’d shoot if he got in front of me the last week. I had a meeting tonight, so the search got cut short. I’ll be back out there tomorrow to do a body search. I haven’t had the greatest luck with shots from ground level. He ducked some and I think I hit high lung, as a result he didn’t bleed well at all. I magine when he tipped over a ton of blood came out, but that doesn’t help me. He was pretty run down and beat up, so I’m not too upset about not getting the meat, coyotes will make short work of him I’m sure. He was mainly a buck that just needed shot. He was a small racked bully.

Here’s an early pic of him

Good luck on finding him...

With thisCovid, no one was willing to fly so I drove from NY with my 2 boys and met my brother who drove down from Chicago. With the bright moon, pigs have been nocturnal. Still, we are having a great time. Here are some of the deer I’ve passed. Two were too young and another broke several point. That these are being passed gives you an idea of a couple we’ve targeted. Although it’s not for everyone, there’s nothing like TX for seeing big deer. My boys and brother have not been as picky... 9063A466-CA8B-44D8-8291-7597B055F2D4.jpegA3DAB625-6575-4595-AC78-A2C5ACCACFC0.jpeg
