2020 Live from the Stand

I hiked up to the Rock Pile yesterday morning, squirrels and birds.

Then I hiked up

to the Kill Zone for the afternoon, more squirrels and birds.

My neighbor north, a day ago shot a buck that he was less than proud of. And yesterday morning neighbor east shot and "missed" a big one that went up into my Sanctuary. I'll wait till seasons end to see if I can find that one. I haven't seen a big buck in over a week and there are no more day time pictures. So now I'm contemplating whether to continue to watch squirrels from my stands or venture into Sanctuary and make matters worse.

It’s an absolutely beautiful afternoon in KS after the rain yesterday. Headed to one of the old honey homes after that big eight on our property tour. Hope to be in the stand before 2.

I went out early and was easing along my trail through the property heading to the North hang on stand. I got almost midway when a deer started snorting next to the trail and was just staying ahead of me as if he was stopping and waiting on me so he could blow all the way through the woods announcing my arrival. I decided to just stop at my stand in the oaks midway in. I ended up seeing a doe moving my way and then all of a sudden one of the neighbor dogs came by and it spooked off. The dog left so I continued to wait and a limpy 4 point came by and went all the way around me until he was in my wind stream. He didn’t like it at all and let the world know it as he was leaving. I have been pretty bummed out about this entire season as my target deer disappeared on October 8th and I really haven’t had a target. Just been waiting on a stranger buck during the rut but it’s like we never had a rut here. I never saw a chase and everything that seemed like rut activity happened in early to mid October. My grandson buck he killed was tending a doe in mid October!

When I got down I pulled a camera card to look it over and this is what I found...

So I went and pulled another card at another location and found this.

Late start this morn but worth the sunrise drive. Tomorrow starts rifle so last real hunt for a bow.
Had 2 bucks spar beneath my stand yesterday morn. Pretty cool. How do they not lose an eye every time???
Today 2 bucks w one 8 that I couldnt get clean shot on. Like Okie weird rut year and my true list of 3 have been under the radar. Warmest Nov I know of. I sold a snow blower in a wk of 70 deg temps!! Lol
Put up blind this wk to take the 9and 6 yo grandpups hunting. Should be interesting the 3 of us in that. Prob scare off all the deer for miles but should be fun. The clover, grain , and self-reseeding brassica doing well. The barn side single brassica plot is the bomb!

Me as well...love walking in in the afternoon without deer blowing! In the oaks this evening...partly cloudy and mid 40’s for temps and a renewed energy for the hunt!

It has been an enjoyable weekend for my grandsons, Robert and Jack, and me. The spartan camera had shown lots of activity, even some nice bucks, but mostly at night. We tried to get to stands early to intercept a couple. They both want bucks but I let them choose what to shoot.
First morning I have them at the prime locations and I take what's left. Well you know where the deer show up.

We want a couple big does for meat so I debate shooting one. I send pics to the boys and they are like "shoot poppa, you should get the first one". I was coached into taking this 110 pounder

Afternoon hunt was null and void but Sunday morning got interesting. Jack had four deer line up about 70 yards in front of him. He sent pics and I had a camera on them too.

More good does and he was trying to decide if to shoot. He said three are all in a row. His 16 yr old brother was beside himself wanting jack to shoot. Here is part of our texting:

Did not make Sportscenter but Jack picked out the biggest one and another 110 pounder to the processor.
We are back out again and hope to have Robert in a good location.

Hanging out with these two is a lot of fun for poppa. They go home tonight and tomorrow their 8 year old sister comes with me to "camera hunt", eat hot dogs and sleep in the bunkhouse. We will wake up to this view:

I saw 4 bucks tonight and one doe, the bucks pestered the doe all evening. It’s no wonder many of the does are awol right now. Here’s the most impressive of the bucks, he appears to be a 2 year old. The buck I took a picture of above dwarfed him in body size.

I saw a small 4 point at 5:00 and then later Just before dark I had a doe and 2 fawns come in...the fawns were eating and the doe was spooky as all get out. A couple minutes later some deer started snorting down in the creek bottom from my scent stream. It sounded like they were more than 100 yards away and it put the deer in front of me even more on alert. Finally the snorting stopped and dark fell with the 3 deer in front of me and then all of a sudden I hear deer running and grunting and a bunch of deer came running Through from the south And deer were bolting every which way. I have no idea how many but I would say more than 10 with a larger heavier deer doing the pushing. The deer all went north of position and I took the opportunity to get down and get out of there before something else came in in the dark. Cold tonight, should have frost in the AM...try it again tomorrow...

I’ll be out tomorrow morning before work. It might be one of those special mornings. You’re right Okie, it’s gonna be chilly!

8 does just came by within 5 yards...frosty and still. Here is one of the scrapes that popped up here in the past 2 days.

Foggy and a balmy 29 degrees this morning at the stadium stand. One little guy so far. Can’t hunt too late. Let the games begin!

Sometimes we wonder what happens to those big bruiser bucks that we have on camera for a season and then we never see them again. This 15 pointer is from another state and all the lease hunters in the neighborhood were after him all fall, then a local farmer I know shot him in the woods behind his barn this past Saturday morning and probably none of those hunters will ever find out what happened to him...

Don't know that I have anything in the "bruiser" category but the bucks we have, and so many of the does, are absolutely nocturnal. I bust my brain trying to figure how to get the boys on one during daylight hours. We hunt!
