2020 Live from the Stand

I’m back in the tree. The woods busted open this morning. Temps in the 20s and the deer were moving. I got down to help dad with one of our more mature bucks. Biggest neck I’ve seen in a while.

I saw more does running through the timber than I could count and some nice deer. Just can’t catch up with the one I’m after.
Wow. Looking at the neck that's got to be "bruiser" right there.

Back on stand in the backyard...hoping a bruiser follows the does in and they come out earlier than last night. South wind is howling!

First 2 in...

Just saw the 2 this evening...howling south winds and warm temps seem to be putting a damper on daytime activity right now...

Had a good evening in the woods, a nice 6 came by. At first glance he had me reaching for my bow, at second glance I reached for my camera. I don’t have any problem with 6s at all; as a matter of fact, I’d love to shoot a big 6, but this guy needs another year or two. Also, my brother-in-law shot one this evening. Said shot looked good, hopefully it’s on a cart on the way to the truck right now. He’s in the boonies and service is sketchy.

That is a nice 6. It takes a pretty special 6 to crack 120, and soon after that point they get to looking pretty good on the wall.

My dad has been after one of those special deer for 4 years now. “Weiner Stick”, so named for his one-time forks on each side, used to be a big six. He sprouted another tine the year of the picture below. Then the year after that he sprouted one on the other side and became an eight. He actually has begun to go down hill a little bit; if my ever dad shoots him, it will be a bittersweet moment for Dad.

Here he is this year

Congratulations to your Dad HB and your spot looks a lot like the one I was in yesterday morning.

Yesterday evening it was a deerless day.

The terrain we are hunting is almost identical. I'm a little apprehensive to make a bunch of changes there, but it is just a dead tree mess at this point. A big dead ash fell and is hung up in another dead ash about 15' from my stand. It's getting dangerous.

That stand is literally surrounded by bedding and has been a killer during the rut.

Could you use the dying ash to your advantage? Go in there in the off season and drop it on brush piles, all the while keeping trails open past your stand?

Finally got a full day hunt. Temps started at 20 but SW wind. Regardless I had deer surrounded me thru out the morn. None of the 3 on my list tho. Even had an estrous doe walk beneath my stand bleating louder than I’ve ever heard just begging for a big buck to give her the zip code!!
Moved to different stand after 12. I have 2 stands here a hundred yards apart. I chose the thicker brush one. And of course a hot doe got chased by an 8 bruiser directly beneath the unchosen stand. WT... fun to watch tho.
Last pic is my buddies toad he shot yesterday while I was closing a deal to sell my business. But I’m happy for him.
