2018 corn planting

It’s coming up! The good spots look really good, but there are definitely some patchy areas. In general I think the crop will be good. The thing that has hurt the most is cold temps. I also think I planted a little too deep. Love and learn.

Are you picking all of it or leaving some for the deer? What are you planting for a fall crop where the corn comes off?

New Idea 323 one row picker. I repaired a few broken parts during the off-season but still had some trouble yesterday. Two of the chains are too loose, and after awhile one of them would jump off the sprocket every 30 seconds. I tried to take a couple links out of the chain, but the way it was setup meant I could either remove none or 4...4 was too many and none was not enough. Typical!

I did manage to pick a buggy load though.

I’m going to order a new chain today and be back at it next weekend. I’ll sell the corn to deer hunters, keep some for myself, and leave some standing for the wildlife. The field I picked yesterday yielded about 100 bushels/acre.

You did good! :) Just be very careful around it. Don't get off the tractor with the PTO or chains running

Awesome job. Although we don’t grow it, we source our corn locally. We’re lucky that we have farmland nearby and when he’s out there harvesting his corn we’ll call him and pull our gain buggy out to the field and he fills it up straight from the combine. He does this for us because he knows we trap pigs which also helps him in return. We don’t get the corn for free but he does give us a great price and usually end up with way more in the buggy than what we paid for as he just “eyeballs” it.

Works out great for us. Only issue is the corn is a little dirty with bits of stalk in it but the hogs and deer don’t care. We do have to sift it through a screen as it comes out of the buggy if we plan to put it in a sling feeder.

do you sell the corn you harvest - or use it in feeders? Maybe you said but I didn't see it. Corn grew fast - and looked like full ears -

I would like to sell it, but the logistics are tough. I would prefer to sell in bulk and just pick directly into someone else’s grain wagon. That way they can just drive off with it at the end of the day.

There is money to be made in selling it by the bushel (bagged), but requires significantly more labor.
