    Driveway tree planting

I am planning a new tree planting project for the driveway of my farm in Southwest Mississippi. The gravel drive is approx 200 yards long, ditched, with 20’ of shoulder across the ditches on each side. The drive is surrounded by heavily thinned mature pines and gets a reasonable amount of...

    On the hunt for persimmons

I have reached out in years past, but again I am looking for anyone who would like to share unique persimmon scions with me. I have an orchard on my farm in Mississippi planted with nothing but native persimmons (around 30 trees) that my grandfather and I planted in 2012. It won't seem like much...

    Persimmon Scions

I have an orchard of native persimmons on my farm in Mississippi that my grandfather and I planted in 2013, roughly 25 trees and I am adding about 10-15 more to fill the area out. Most of them are getting close to fruiting size. Luckily for me, the small food plot I chose to convert into this...

    February Habitat Management

Deer season has come and gone, February is here, and it’s time to get to work! Habitat management happens year ‘round, but late winter and early spring are my favorite times to be out in the woods working on habitat projects! What projects do y’all have planned for this off-season? And it’s...

    Persimmon and Crabapple Scions

If anybody wants to share some special persimmon or crabapple scions with me, I'm happy to trade one of my pear or southern apple varieties or hershey honeylocust. Orrrrrrr I can just send cash, haha. I need more persimmon varieties to fill out my native persimmon orchard.

    Grafting Problems

I had a horrible success rate grafting this year. I grafted onto young rootstock as well as field grafted onto trees I had planted years ago. I had about 30% success on the field grafts (persimmon), which I did in early March, and I had almost zero percent success on the rootstock grafts (pear...

    Grafting Tool

This is my first year of serious grafting, and my technique/process has changed quite a bit over the past few months. While searching the internet for grafting info to improve my technique, I discovered these grafting tools. I found one with good feedback and a cheap price, and it came in today...

    Grafting Questions

This weekend I tried my first field grafts on my persimmon orchard. Huge thanks again to dogdoc and Fish for sharing a few scions with me. Most of the grafts were standard cleft grafts because of differing sizes between the original tree and the scions, but I was able to do a whip graft on a...

    Sealant for Graft Union

What are ya'll using to seal graft unions? I've got some paraffin wax grafting tape I plan to use on small grafts but do I also need a liquid-type sealant underneath that? And I definitely need a liquid sealant for bigger rootstock and small scions. Has anybody used caulk?

    Rootmaker: Bag vs Pots

Who's got a preference? After sprouting trees in Rootmaker 18s trays, I usually move them to Rootmaker Injection Molded 1 Gallon plastic pots. They're $2.25 retail (I don't have a wholesale account set up) and extremely sturdy. I'm on year 3 for most of mine, and I see little or no deterioration...

Keeping Track of Trees in the Field

I'm a tree nut, like many of you, and I'm getting to the point where I've planted so many trees on my property that I almost have too many to keep track of in my head. Most of mine are labeled with a metal tag with the cultivar name. I noticed recently that a couple of the first trees I planted...

    Persimmon Orchard

I have a skinny 1/2 acre field on my property that I converted into a persimmon orchard when we bought the land. My grandfather helped me plant all the persimmon trees there and he's now passed, so its a special spot to me. There are about 24 trees and I know that one day soon it will be a...

    Growing Honeylocust From Seed

I just wanted to share a little project with ya'll. I grow lots of different species of fruit and mast trees every year to plant on my farm and share with others. Here in the Deep South, we love a honeylocust tree. I've heard that many people in other parts of the country hate them and cut them...

I need help IDing this weed

I've been through Forest Plants of the Southeast a couple of times and can't ID this weed. It's coming up thick in a couple of my food plots and I'd like to know what it is before I eradicate it. If it's the same plant I think it is that we had issues with last summer, it has little yellow...

    Unproductive Sawtooth Oaks

When my dad and I bought the first piece of our property, the previous owners had half-heartedly planted some sawtooths in some of the food plots years before. I would imagine they are 12-15 years old now, with 3-5 trees planted together in each field. When we closed on the property, I noticed...

    Rootmaker

I know most of y'all are already using Rootmaker trays and pots, but if you aren't, you should be. This is what I like to see! That's Marianna GF8-1 (Plum) rootstock grown for one season in a 1 gallon rootmaker injection molded pot. When I planted it, it was a piece of cutting with a couple of...

    Plum Scions

    Early bloomer

Apparently this guy doesn't listen to groundhogs. 80 degrees today at my farm in SW Mississippi. This is a large Southern Bartlett. A few of my other pears are leafed out but the large majority are still dormant or just breaking bud. I planted 6 pears and 8 plums today.

    Collecting Scion Wood

Would somebody give a beginner grafter a few tips on selecting scion wood? I've grown hundreds and hundreds of trees from seed for the past few years, and this year I'm going to try my hand at grafting from a few of the varieties of plums and pears I have growing on my farm. I already have OHxF...

    Pineapple Pears

Is anybody on here growing Pineapple Pears? I have several planted on my property. They were large trees when planted, and this will be their fourth spring in the ground. They are easily over 20' or taller with a 6" base. They have yet to produce a single pear. They are planted with John...
