    Flatwood natives?

I have never ordered from Flatwood Natives. One thing that bothers me, is the call a cultivar that has been grown for over 150 years, a Wild Deer Pear. Is it a grafted clone of Kieffer or is it a seedling of Kieffer? If I could only grow one pear for deer, It would be Kieffer. I don't grow...

    Apple trees from cuttings?

I've rooted m111 dormant hardwood cuttings by just sticking them in the row where I planted my bench grafts. If I were going to try it again, I would take 5" dormant cuttings, wound the base, dip them in a 3000ppm IBA hormone and I would stick them in a cold frame. I would use 50% sand and 50%...

    Persimmon?

From the photo, it looks like a Kaki persimmon. I still think that it looks like Fuyu, but without a tag, it will be tough to ID. Thomas, I have Deer Magnet. I'll be glad to share some scion wood with you next Spring. I'm looking for late dropping persimmons and pears. We can do a swap if you...

    Persimmon?

It is hard to tell from the photo due to the lack of a scale. It looks like it could be Fuyu. Asian persimmon leaves are usually larger and glossy compared to our native persimmons. The fruit is usually persistent, not falling from the tree until they are mush. I have yet to find a seed in my...

Has anyone checked Ammo prices today?

I've never seen M855, ss109s with poly tips. Tips painted green are what I've seen. There are a lot of hunting options out there. I load Sierra Game Kings for my ARs and Mini-14. I watched as one of my hunting buddies shot a 190 Lb boar hog yesterday. He was using a hand loaded 60 grain...

    Sawtooth seedling issue

Plant them. It could be too much water, too little water, or a nutrient issue. There is a good chance that the issue will correct itself after they are planted.

    Chicory Novice Question

I plant my chicory around September 15th here in S. C. When I mix it with greens and clover, I mix it up with a bag of lime. That helps me get an even distribution of my seed.

    white cloud crimson clover

I planted White Cloud two years ago. It produced a nice stand of clover the following spring, but failed to reseed well. I'm going to overseed with Fixation clover this year. White Cloud was derived from Crimson Clover. From my trials, Dixie Reseeding crimson clover reseeds well the...

How do you know when a deer is coming?

In my neck of the woods, crows are too busy harassing owls and hawks to bother with deer. Squirrels are the biggest liars in the woods. I pay attention to the Carolina Wrens. I first make sure that they aren't fussing at me. If they are not, they are fussing at a deer, coyote or a bobcat.

    Teach me about cuttings

Most common landscaping shrubs are propagated by cuttings. Timing is dictated by the type of plant. Here in the Piedmont of S. C. I stuck hollies and junipers around the end of February. Azaleas and crepe myrtles in June. My cut off day used to be around the 4th of July. Some things you...

    Bug Below Apple Trees

I don't recognize that one. Tent caterpillars are usually the problem on my trees. Spray with Dipel, (BT) if they start causing a problem. You should also look up the Puss caterpillar if you are growing apple trees. They can give you a nasty sting.
