Jump into managing this field? Or farm it for a few years?

Hi all, just wanted to give an update. I talked to a custom sprayer and a local farmer. I'm going to have the field sprayed in the next week or so and the farmer will smooth out the rough spots after. I'll take some pics to show progress. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Temperature when killing stumps with GLY

I spent many days this winter doing cut stump treatment of bush honeysuckle with 20% glyphosate. The temps were anywhere from the 30s to 50s when I sprayed and so far I haven't noticed any of the stumps resprouting. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    Spray Field 40

It has been a while since I've been able to post. I spent several weeks on the road for work, and was on vacation last week in Orlando. It was tough to leave that warm weather, but I'm looking forward to doing more work on the property. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk

    Solar Farm Lease Opportunity; Opinions?

I appreciate all your responses. I'm going to meet with an attorney to look things over and find out if it's legitimate. The company does seem reputable. The contract states where would be an "option period" where they should make the decision whether to move forward or not. During this...

    Solar Farm Lease Opportunity; Opinions?

Hi all, I have recently joined the forum and began a property tour called "Spray Field 40". On this property I have about 15 acres of fallow field that I was planning on converting to deer habitat. Ironically, I was contacted by a rep from a solar company called Nextera Energy. Apparently...

Thanks Pinetag! This definitely spurred some ideas for what to do! I'll try to get it drawn up here in the next couple days. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Jump into managing this field? Or farm it for a few years?

When is the earliest I could have the fescue sprayed in the spring? I ask because I have ordered some shrubs / trees that I would like to plant in the drainages and along the border of the property and I don't want to risk having them get hit with Glyphosate if I don't have to. Thanks for your...

    Spray Field 40

Currently I don't see much activity at all on the south end of the property. I think it's mainly because the southern end of the woods is pretty open and there is nothing really in the field for the deer at this time. I think as I get the field converted into better habitat I'll start to see...

    Spray Field 40

Here is my existing plan for the wooded area of the property. A lot of the trail cutting and some of the hinge cutting has already taken place this winter. Basically I have planned trails to pass between thickets (bedding areas) and trails to head from bedding areas to the field drainages, where...

Jump into managing this field? Or farm it for a few years?

I was able to meet with one of the local farmers yesterday to get an idea on what he could do with the field. Basically there are two options at this time. Option 1 - Spray the field in Spring (he said late April) and disc the rough spots. Then I would let things go and see what comes in. Cost...

Jump into managing this field? Or farm it for a few years?

Hey. The only areas that would be smoothed out would be the areas where the pipes were dug up. Is that what you were suggesting? Interesting idea on trying to use the ditches as an advantage. Actually, some of them do hold water. Perhaps I could keep a strategic water hole? Sent from my...

Jump into managing this field? Or farm it for a few years?

Hi Drycreek. Just so I am understanding, you are basically suggesting the use of a dozer instead of a disc to fix the humps and ruts? The field has two big long drainages running east to west which probably would be let go to prevent erosion. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk

    Spray Field 40

Hey Pinetag. I just started reading your property tour and was thinking the same thing as you. I definitely see how we could benefit from watching how things work out on each of our properties. I'll keep reading up on yours. Now that I have a nice corridor cut along the creek I plan to keep a...

Can pin oaks grow within a swamp?

Hi there. I just came across this post and will agree with the others that pin oaks can grow in a swampy bottom area. I was really surprised to find several of them growing in my creek bottom that is wet almost year-round.

    Spray Field 40

Hi Chainsaw. To be honest, I have no idea what kind of tree that is in the picture haha. I was actually cutting trails in that picture. One observation I made last season was the deer are extensively travelling in the creek bottom, but without defined movement past areas I could access and set...

    Spray Field 40

Hey Sampson, Here is a zoomed out pic of the property. There are many large ag food sources near by. As I said in an earlier post, I'm located in a major apple producing county. So you can see that there are apple orchards all around me. There are also several corn / bean fields in the area...

I found this huge sycamore in the creek bottom the other day. It has a hollowed out bottom. Looks pretty cool but I don't want to be near when it comes down. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk

Here are some pics of the waterway on the NE side of the creek bottom. This is just off of the NW inside corner of the field. As you can see it is extremely mucky plans covered in Reed Canary Grass. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
