    Sam's Stompin' Ground! - Illinois 170 acres

On my production acres, spraying dicamba in the late fall was the way to get ahead of my marestail problem. Great thread!

    Anyone else struggling with weather

My dad has farmed for 47 years, he says this has been the worst spring he's experienced. Many of our low areas have been planted 5 times, and are full of water again. The planter is parked in the shed for good now.

    Thoughts on Osage orange/hedge

Around here Osage is about the most preferred woody browse along with mulberry. I hinge individual limbs on mine to keep some growth within reach for them.

    Sheds yet?

The drop is going to be slow and scattered in my part of the world this year. The deer are living easy! I've found 8 so far in many miles of walking.

    Food Plot " Stacking"

I call what I've been experimenting with a form of relay cropping. I plant milo early with an adjustable 2 row planter. I plant the milo in 30 inch rows, but turn wide to leave a 45 inch middle between planter passes. When the milo is starting to set seed I move my planter units out to 60" and...

Let's get your input on shrubs

As a farmer mulberry should be on my bad list, but I have to say it is the most heavily browsed woody species in my area. People in the corn belt are taught to hate them but they are a great wildlife plant. I'm also doing a shrub planting next year. I'm leaning towards the shrubs most of us...

RR2X- Roundup Ready 2 Xtend. Describes the trait that makes a crop tolerant to both glyphosate and dicamba herbicides. The...

    Passions beyond Deer & Family?

I know it's supposed to be "other than" deer but my biggest passion that isn't habitat or hunting is shedding. It's become quite the obsession. I walk at least 3 hrs a day from mid Jan right up to corn planting. I Love the things I've learned about the mature bucks by all that time walking every...

How to grow Dwarf Chinkapin Oaks (DCOs) from seed

I've got 1.5 pounds of acorns on the way. I'm sure this has been covered but haven't seen wether or not the DCO acorns should be float tested like any other oak? Thanks

    Turkey plot

When planting fall plots I always leave a 10 ft strip of bare dirt along one edge. Mid day birds seem to love these dusty strutting lanes for some reason. Also they are a great "at a glance" scouting tool during deer season. A quick drive by shows all the deer tracks coming and going.

    Ravenna Grass?

I personally steer clear of anything non native, especially plants that are known to be invasive. It's cool looking for sure but I would definitely look for a native alternative
