    Where do they go?

I whole heartedly agree with FL Plotter. It's not very often someone can simply start hunting an area, and have huge success, without some kind of effort to improve the habitat. Ya gotta give it some time and work the land, mineral spots, small food plots, clear nice shooting lanes, low...

    Where did I hit him?

When did you shoot this deer, yesterday? If so, I'd get some friends and keep looking. Most likely it's laying dead somewhere.

    Lockdown.

Saw some chasing and a lot of movement last weekend. My brother and I both took nice 8's within an hour of each other the end of October. Maybe the late heat here compressed the rut.

    Predicting total failure...

Typically we seed the beginning of September. The last few years we did this with very little rain forecast. As you can guess, the seed didn't take well at all. This year we still haven't planted because of literally zero rain. Hell, the only rain we got last year was from two hurricanes...

    Crossbow Blow UP!

Glad he wasn't hurt. My brother was sighting his in when the arm broke sending pieces flying through the air. Someone is going to get seriously hurt when this happens. If there was some way to "cock" the thing right before shooting would be ideal but that's a lot of movement. Be careful out...

    2019 Live from the Stand

Going to take my crossbow for a walk this Saturday, 8/17, buck only. Midday sit from 10am to 2pm...that's our typical buck pattern for early velvet bucks. First time doing an August sit but gotta give it a shot.

Any suggestions for a new turkeygun?

I'm a man of limited means so...I turkey hunt with a Verona 12ga, semi-auto. I have more expensive guns but I like this one because I don't mind if it gets dirty. Hunting in spring can get muddy. It was stolen from me a number of years ago and returned when the men in blue caught the jerk...

What do you think is going on here?

I think I'd vote woodpecker damage, a lot of woodpeckers. I don't see worms doing that much damage.

    Camera Placement Strategies

One other tid bit of info I didn't see mentioned...I try and face the camera south or north. If it faces east or west, you'll get those important pictures of deer and the picture or video is whited out because the sun is either coming up or setting.

    Odd jobs you've done.

Cleaning out our camp outhouse is always an exciting adventure, does that count? I once helped my neighbor pull a car door dent out with a plunger. My wife makes me help her wax her, parts that need waxing.

    Wood stove size help

The biggest "issue" I have with a woodstove is it being able to burn (i.e. have hot coals) slowly for hours while sleeping. Ours will burn for 6 to 7 hours and still have enough hot coals left to crank it back up. Perhaps the bigger stove would allow you to cram some nice oaks inside, damper...

    Cutting for firewood

Looks like you have plenty of advice from others more experienced at this than I. Do love running the chainsaw in winter. I saw St. Lawrence County, NY and thought I'd mention my family is from Gouverneur and we still have a small camp on Mud Lake. Love that amish country. Stay warm my friend!

    How Does He know?

I know this is sort of off topic but we generally see our best bucks, in groups, on camera in August, during the day, in full velvet, on the verge of shedding the velvet. As soon as that velvet is shed, it's on. Very few pics, if any, of those bucks again on camera. And rarely do we see them...

    New Adult Hunter, go solo?

Shooting at a range when it's warm weather is easier than a breezy day in the 20's. Try shooting a deer when your body is shaking from the cold. Don't forget a compass or some other navigation device (learn how to use it). Always let someone know where you are going. If you don't have much...
