Direct Seed Apple Trees for Deer

Thanks everyone. I think I can still get my hands on some Antonovka rootstock yet this year. I have plenty of tubes and weed mats already from prior plantings, so it would just be the rootstock cost. I'm going up Turkey hunting this weekend and will map out where I want trees.

Direct Seed Apple Trees for Deer

Has anyone direct seeded apple seeds in the fall with the intent to build a small orchard for deer? I have a bunch of dolgo crab seeds and this could be a way to get a bunch of free trees. Please let me know your thoughts. Pros: Free Works if you don't care what type of apple the trees...

    Thoughts on Kale?

I've never used kale in food plots, but I grow it in my garden and eat a lot of it in salads. I approve!

    Need Chainsaw Recommendations

You guys are awesome. Thanks for the responses. Initially, I'll use this to cut felled trees for firewood at my new house. We had to take 35-40 trees down to put the new house where we wanted it. I had the tree guy give me a big discount by just stacking the logs on the side of the yard...

    Need Chainsaw Recommendations

I'm in need of a new chainsaw. I have a small 16" saw, but need something larger/powerful. What does everyone recommend? I don't mind spending some money - I want something that is well made and will last years.

One Thousand Chestnut Trees - a Whitetail Deer Project

Wayne, et al., I'd like to fertilize my trees (planted spring 2016, now 4-5 feet tall). They are in tubes with landscape fabric 3 ft in each direction. Do I drop the fertilizer directly into the tube, or spread under the fabric? I've never fertilized trees before...

    Driveway weeds

I had a new gravel driveway installed a year ago and I battled weeds all last summer. I'm only on the property 1-2 weekends a month. Gly works, but I'm looking for other preventative options. Is there a chemical I can spray that will prevent weeds from germinating? It's a driveway, so I'm...

    Push Row Seeder

Thanks j-bird! That's a lot of useful info to think about. I think I'll try soybeans via the broadcast method next year and keep on the lookout for a refurbished JD71 2-row planter should I decide to do corn.

    Push Row Seeder

Anyone ever use anything like this to plant corn/beans? https://www.amazon.com/Earthway-1001-B-Precision-Garden-Seeder/dp/B00002N66A/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1480612673&sr=8-19-spons&keywords=row+planter&psc=1 I have two plots that are big enough for corn/beans. One is 1/2-3/4 acre, the...

Let's talk hunting boots for cold weather

+1 for the boot blankets. Keep my feet nice and warm at any temperature (and I hunt in WI, which can get cold...). In fact, just ordered a pair to have for my kids as they start hunting. They like to put a hand warmer in the boot blanket, but outside of their boots - says it makes it toastier.

    GO CUBS!

Good game last night. Arrieta was solid; the bats were finding the ball even though they left a ton of runners on. It's going to be a fun weekend here in Chicago! I'll be there tomorrow - can't wait!

    Show Your Tree Seedlings Thread

Here is one of my chestnut seedlings. I direct seeded this in mid-May and this was taken in late August. I received the nuts last fall from Wayne. I'd estimate this is 4' - 4.5' tall. I'm pretty happy with the first year's growth...

    Resources for Growing Chestnuts

Bill - Wayne is the expert, but I'll weigh in on what I did (which is the lazy man's route). I received the nuts from Wayne last year, promptly separated them into 5 ziplock bags of 10 nuts each; placed them in the back of the fridge and forgot about them until April when my wife asked when I...

Advice needed on protecting young trees

I've got 21 young chestnuts in the ground that are approaching their first winter. They are in 5' tree tubes, but I also want to protect them from mice, voles, etc. what is the best way to do this? It read about putting metal screen around the trunk, but I need someone to explain (in detail)...

    Swamp White Oak

My FIL has a huge swamp white oak in his backyard and it's loaded with acorns. I read online that when the acorns fall, they need to be put into the ground quickly (within 2 weeks) for germination. Anyone with experience on this that can advise? I'd like to plant 50-100 at the Lodge this fall.
