    Fruit wait finally over

Only took about 9 years! Finally have apples in most of the trees and pears are ready to break the branches some are so full. The pears in the bottom also producing, but to a much lesser extent. Did have a late frost, but I guess it didn't hurt much. Now, if I can keep the squirrels at bay...

    He's a Runner!

https://www.outdoorlife.com/hunting/whitetail-travels-200-miles/ Interesting story about the buck that covered 200 miles during Missouri rut. Seemed to be on the move every day, averaging 8.5 miles per day. Kind of crazy to think about. No wonder so many people talk about the buck their...

    Too late to fertilize?

Question: Have a mixed brassica plot, about a quarter acre. Did decent given the drought conditions we had in Central Indiana that ended about two weeks ago. About half the leaves have a yellow tint. Is it too late to fertilize now? We're averaging highs/lows of ~ 60/40 degrees give or take...

    Bird down in Indiana

22 lbs, 10 inch beard, 1 inch spurs. Started calling Friday evening, immediately responded. Took about 45 minutes to commit. Moved in slowly. At about 35 yards, lost interest in decoys and started drifting off. Took the shot with my old school Remington 870, tom didn't know what hit him...

    Building a Pond Dock 101

Decided pond needed a dock. Used rail road ties for posts out in water, used a 6 inch treated post from tractor supply for the two pillars on shore. Solid white oak. Main beams are about 17 feet long. The first half of dock is 4.5 feet wide, second half is 6.5 feet. Pictures to follow...

    Ammo

Well, back to finding ammo in the popular calibers, 9MM and 45 ACP, hard to find. MidwayUSA website message: "COVID-19 has impacted nearly every person and business around the world. MidwayUSA is no exception. Order volume has increased dramatically and we’re doing everything possible to...

    Pond Upgrade

Decided the pond just wanted big or deep enough. Didn't have the cash to build it the size I wanted when we first had it done about 6 years ago. Fast forward 6 years. Amazing what you can do with a little Kubota tractor. It is a Kubota with attitude though, it believes it is a bulldozer...

Chestnuts, the wait is finally over

My Dunstan's that were planted in 2013 as two year old trees finally have a few burs on them. Essentially 8 years from seed to producing seeds. Interestingly, my Chinese chestnuts also have burs. Those were planted in 2015 as one year old, 3 feet trees. Essentially 5 years from seed to seed...

    Pear tree master

My 10+ year old Kieffer pear tree had a bumper year, again. First five gallon bucket full. Would estimate there will b at least 10, five gallon buckets by end of September. First bucket was from last two storms that blew through and knocked these off. Note how the branches are all hanging...

Breathing new life into old bush hog

Bought an old Bush Hog brand cutter for $400 to manage the food plots and keep the trails mowed. She was used and abused over the years. Corners were splitting apart, several weak points in the steel, rusting quite a bit, etc. Welded her up and slapped two coats on, looking pretty fine if I...

    Minimum HP for Tractor

Finally looking to take the plunge on a preferably low hour, gently used compact tractor, must have FEL. Leaning toward Kubota. What is the minimum HP you would recommend? Uses will be bush hogging, food plot work (2-3 acres) moving dirt with FEL occasionally, and pulling logs out of the...

Shooting range - This is how you do it

Made a shooting range. Has 10, 25, and 50 yard targets. The 10 yard targets are 4 inches in diameter, 25 yard are 8-12 inches in diameter. 50 yard is to just back up another 25 yards to a shooting bench. Targets are 3/8 inch plate steel. Sent from my SM-J327T using Tapatalk

    Grafting 101

Never too early to be planning for next spring. I have a no name apple tree on front side of house that produces about 8, 5 gallon buckets of 2.5 inch yellow apples every year like clockwork. I want to take some of the heavy producing end branches and graft these to rootstock early next...

    Kieffer Pear Trees Not Producing

I have about 5 Kieffer pear trees that stand a good 15+ feet tall, 2 inches in diameter at the trunk. These have been in the ground for 5 years I believe. They look great, fully leaved out, good structure, were full of blooms. We had a late spring, but no late frost. Once again, no pears...

    Food Plot Nursery

Found this little guy in my food plot yesterday, can't be more than a few days old. Smaller than our cat! Didn't move a muscle, even when I snapped a couple of pictures. I cut short my plans and left him alone, I'm sure the doe was somewhere nearby.

Franklin Cider Apple - Anyone have these?

Received a solicitation for Franklin Cider Apple trees recently. Sounds like a decent tree for wildlife, large producer, decent disease resistance, late dropper, etc. Anyone have these planted? From what I saw online, this is a newer tree with good wildlife potential, but I doubt anyone has...

    Year End Deals

For those here in the midwest, Tractor Supply has some really good deals on remaining food plot seed. I found 2 lb bags of Ladino Clover on sale for $8.99, 40 lb bags of plotspike forage on sale for $13.99, and Biologic bulbs and beets for $8.99/bag. Most of the remaining items are at least...
