    2024 Shed Hunting

Finally found my first shed of the year. It dropped Saturday night.

Buying land with a timber reservation

I looked at a cool property yesterday that I’m interested in buying, but there is one major hiccup - the timber company (that currently owns the land) wants to retain rights to perform the next thinning of the planted pines. There is probably 125 acres of 24 year old loblolly pine that is ready...

    2023-24 Trapping

I had to break out the traps this year after taking a couple of years off. I focused mainly on otters since they are decimating my fish pond. So far I’ve caught 5 in conibear 280s and 330s. I’ve also caught 5 coons in the otter sets. Last night I set 11 dog proof traps and caught 5 coons.

    Extra chestnut?

Anyone got an extra chestnut? I need to replace a dunstan chestnut tree that was never happy. Wal-mart doesn’t have any and I didn’t save any nuts from last year’s crop. Will pay for a seedling or some nuts. Thanks!

    Fall plots in South Carolina

This property is tricky for food plotting. The soil is very sandy, and deer pressure is high. I won’t bother with summer plots in the future because they are a waste of time and money. Fall plots are easier because deer focus on acorns. However, October is so dry that plots planted too early...

Live from the stand - 2023

It’s that special day again - opening day of deer season in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. It’s hot, humid, the mosquitoes are eating me alive, the wind is all wrong, and I hear thunder in the distance. What a great day.

    Chufa for turkeys

My summer deer plots were a bust because the deer ate everything within a week of germination. Plan B was to plant chufa for turkeys. My soil is extremely sandy, so it’s well suited for chufa. I used my corn planter for the first time and just planted directly into the destroyed deer plot...

    Random spring pics and projects

I love this time of year. Splitting and stacking firewood for next winter. Beautiful green plots and full waterholes. Sawtooths with brand new leaves. We got 60 acres of longleaf pines planted last week. Final project will be burning another 40 acre section of 10 year old pines.

    Live from the Stand 2022

Deer season is underway in South Carolina. I left work at 4:30 and am in the stand. Saw 3 deer as soon as I got up in the stand. I’m sitting over a corn feeder, but I’m really watching over a 70 acre section of hardwoods that was select cut a few months ago. I’ve never been able to see this much...

    1 week til opening day…

New buck showed up on camera last night, and he’s already in hard antler. Maybe I’ll get him in a week. Can’t believe deer season starts in 7 days.

    Brackish impoundment for ducks

We installed a flash board riser on an old dike last year to keep salt water out of our drainage ditches. As sea levels rise (which they have been doing for years), salt water is becoming a big problem on the coast. One benefit of the flash board riser is the ability to hold water (either fresh...

    Sweet Corn

The first batch of sweet corn is almost ready to pick! I planted a new variety this year - Obsession II. I thought it would be ready on June 19, but some may be ready next week. After keeping it alive with irrigation for much of April/May, we’ve gotten 4.3” of rain in the last two weeks. Should...

    Planting sesame (benne)

Anyone ever planted benne for doves? I’ve read everything I can find on the subject but still not sure exactly how to set my drill. My drill is a Great Plains 706NT. I’m going to block off every other row to give me 15” spacing. I assume that means I calibrate it to plant 12 lbs per acre if...

What to do with this pear tree…

What would you fruit tree experts advise me to do with this pear? I think I should cut the top off and let that new central leader take over - agree? When it fruits this year I’m afraid it will tip over if I do nothing…

    2022 Shed Hunting

I went down to the farm today to do some chores and was surprised to see a nice shed while driving down the driveway. I decided to walk a few field edges and found 2 more. Cool.

Too bad all my birds left…

…they are missing a hell of a meal. Top field is wheat that I’ve sprayed, mowed, and now burnt a few strips. Bottom pics are corn that I silage chopped. My 1 dove on the property is going to be really fat.

Good luck to our Gulf Coast members

Good luck with this hurricane. It’s gonna be a bad one. Poor Louisiana can’t catch a break.

    Live from the stand 2021

Deer season is here in SC. It’s hot and muggy. The thermacell is on. I started out overlooking a 3 acre food plot but the predicted SE wind was actually coming from the W. I decided to move to a plot in the woods that has the remnants of white clover and chicory and a corn pile. The 8 pointer...

    Herd GT 77 Spreader

Does anyone have one of these Herd spreaders for their ATV/UTV? http://www.easyattachments.com/mobile/Product.aspx?ProductCode=GT77ATV What is the smallest spreading width possible? I see the maximum width is 28’, but that’s way too wide for broadcasting on small strips like I want to do.

Another benefit of planting for deer

This is in one section of a 4.5 acre wheat field. Now I just need to figure out how to keep them there for 7 more weeks…
