    Whole Oats -vs- Seed Oats

I stopped down the my local coop last week looking for Winter rye. They didn't have any nor did they have any winter wheat or oats. I bought a bag of oats or wheat, cant remember what one that were intended for feed. I never thought about the weed seed issue!

I'm a bit puzzled by Iron Clay Cowpeas?

How does the Gypsum help out?

    Plot place holder

Like others have mentioned-Winter rye and clover have done wonders for my plots in south central Wisconsin. I think that would be a good combo to start with. Then start on the lime and getting the soil to where you need it.

That is a great looking plot!

Adding 2, 4-d to Gly for burndown

I think 2,4-d has a residual effect, I'm not sure how it is but I was thinking it hangs around for 2-3 weeks?

Is it safe to drive over brassicas to spread fertilizer?

My Dad was helping me with our plots back in early August. I had planted this plot in strips and the brassicas had been planted about 2-3 weeks before. They were 6-10inches tall. We broadcast rye, oats and fertilizer on the unplanted strips and my Dads job was to roll that in. He did that great...

    Buck Forage Oats

I was working with a food plotting guy that was just starting out. We made a deal that he would plant food plots, experiment, run tests etc. in my food plots on my lease. In one of the test plots he broadcast deer mineral and was experimenting if the deer liked it more or less. They seemed to...

    Brassicas planted today....a little late.

I am over seeding a couple plots that I planted back in late July with WR/Oats/Forage peas and clover this coming weekend with WR. I've never tried broadcasting Oats into a existing plot. The WR on the other hand seems to do pretty well this approach.

    Brassicas planted today....a little late.

How do oats do when they are broadcast into a plot, similar results to WR?

    Where Did I Go Wrong?

I find when the WR is mowed and its still green, the thatch disappears pretty fast. It acts similar to thatch in my yard when I mow my grass. When WR makes it to maturity, sets a seed head, its 'woodier' if that is a word. It holds up longer and last longer when it gets mowed, knocked over or...

Cultipacker useful for un-tilled ground (throw-n-mow)?

I think you were correct when you said you shouldn't have mowed the rye. I let mine grow until it developed a seed head, then it was mowed in mid July by the farmer with a brush hog. Depending on how thick the WR gets next year, I am thinking I might try spreading the seed, spraying if needed...

My first throw-n-mow attempt at food plotting

I got up to the land this weekend to check on the plots. My little plot in the woods that I posted about last week is looking pretty good. The gly seemed to kill a lot if not all of the weeds. The roller also seemed to suppress and or kill the weeds. The clover has sprouted and the winter rye is...

    RR Soybeans discoloration after spraying

I agree with the others, that does not look like gly working on the plants. When I spray gly, the plants turn grown and die down. I have never seen the spots before?

    Roundup, them disc-how long?

I have found spraying on nice warm sunny days is the fastest kill with gly.

My first throw-n-mow attempt at food plotting

I agree with increasing the seeding rate. When I first started this 2 years ago, I didn't put down enough seed, then last year I think I put down too much rye and oats and it choked out the radish. But man did the clover come in this spring and summer. Ive never had this much clover growing in...

My first throw-n-mow attempt at food plotting

Yea, I was worrying that might happen. I mowed it as high as the toro mower would go, I think it was level f. I was thinking the mowing would help get the lower weeds, under the canopy. Looking back, probably should have sprayed, waited a week, sprayed again and then broadcast the seed and...

    Australian Winter Peas ratio

We did a mow, spray, broadcast and roll in a total of 4 plots with about 3 acres- I did 250lbs of rye, 150lbs of oats, 50lbs of AWP, 50lbs for forage peas and 25lbs of 4 different kinds of clover. So far the plots are green and looking good. The peas are getting snatched up pretty quick by the...

My first throw-n-mow attempt at food plotting

Yes, I agree that the mix limited the sprayings but I figured I would roll the dice. I am hoping the rye comes in well and gives the clover a chance to take off in the spring. I don't have experience with spreading, spraying, planting and rolling so soon in a plot that was this thick and lush...

My first throw-n-mow attempt at food plotting

I did a throw, mow, spray and roll in this wooded plot. This has been a clover plot for the last 4 years. It was over taken by weeds because I couldn't get up in the woods to mow it with the farmers crops blocking the way. I weed whipped it a couple times but couldn't get ahead of the weeds...
