Working at the Farm - Took a few I-Phone Pics

I agree 100%. I've been trading 15 acres of fields to a local farmer to hay in return for some minor food plot work, but it hasn't really paned out as expected. He planted the first year on October 1st, lost most of his seed, and hasn't worked or cut the fields but once in the two years since...

Fired the Tube and Hired the Cage

That's funny! I had exactly the same experience. I put some hazelnuts in tubes a few years ago, mainly to see where I'd planted them so I don't mow there, and they never really grew. Took off the tubes and Shazam - hazelnut bushes.

Fired the Tube and Hired the Cage

I agree 100%, but if only three out of those one hundred survive, then I've spend a bunch of time and $ thinking that I'm growing trees when in fact I'm growing fodder for mice. Overall, my experience has been that caged trees survive at nearly 100%, when they're planted correctly. It's more...

    Allegheny Chinkapin

Soon. I hope. The shrub tubes I'd been using as protection were like an ice cream cone for the deer, but I finally put a fence around the AC plot two years ago, and I have some hope that I will have nuts soon. Stupid deer.

    J-birds place

I read Jenna's story with great interest and empathy. I had a volleyball injury years ago that causes me inordinate amounts of pain to this day, and I don't tolerate gabapentin. It makes life...interesting. Nothing to the extent that Jenna has experienced, but enough that I commiserate. Anyway...

What insecticide for gypsy moths on apple trees?

Late to the game for Gypsy, I know, but we used Sevin this year on all of our young trees, hardwood and fruit trees both, and with minor exceptions got them through the devastation. Some of our surrounding hillsides are over 70% defoliated. It's simply insane. But the caterpillars should be...

Fired the Tube and Hired the Cage

The benefits of 20/20 hindsight and learning the hard way. I had a roll-off dumped at the property this spring and removed all tubes less than 5' high. A member of another forum came over and grabbed a couple hundred, but most of them were simply tossed (they were on their second life already...

    Upstate Obsession

We fished out there for many years, and the key to the upper Green (at that time, before the fires) was to walk a couple miles from the bottom access upstream. Of course, walking gets you solitude most places out West. Most days, there was a window where the drift boats would float through, but...

Penalty = death by firing squad

I don't know if I strictly qualify as a liberal, but I work in academia and live in NY. And after the year we've had, I might just line up and close my eyes lol.

    Best so far this year...

That drop tine looks to be a unique rack. Nice pics. We summer a few good bucks, but the 800 acre swamp behind us calls them in from all over during the rut, and that's when it gets real.

    Acorn Season 2020

Some of those acorns that you sent me are now out of their tubes and putting on, as you say, new growth with our recent rains. I'm a long ways from having Georgia acorns in NY, but there's still a chance! We also picked up a new property last year that's full of mature red and white oaks; quite...

    Latest trad bow ladder stand

My Mom's husband was putting up a ladder by himself (he's in his 70s), and the ladder started to slip on him. Rather than letting it go, he tried to hold it up using himself as the fulcrum. His wedding ring got caught on one of the bolts, and it ripped his finger off at the first knuckle. Beyond...

    Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) devastation.

You mean there's an invasive that hasn't hit upstate NY yet? Who knew? The existing list is enough to make you cry. Good to know there's more to come lol. And tough to keep the faith...

    Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) devastation.

Our first property is loaded with small ash that's not worth harvesting except maybe for firewood. Any there's more dead trees standing in our area than all the homesteaders in America could burn. Craigslist is full of ads for folks to come cut down dead trees. I've responded by planting massive...

The "what the hell have I done?" moment is here.

Prescribed burns are legal, but aren't often employed up here. You'd want to contact NRCS first. I wish we could do a harvest on our existing property, but there's not enough saw timber to make it worthwhile. I suspect that all of the 6-10 inch Ash will be standing dead wood within a year or...

    Upstate Obsession

We spent years doing an annual trip to the Green, generally fishing without a guide from shore, but walking a couple miles to get away from the crowds. Catfish are jumping! It's one of the most prolific fisheries I've ever had the privilege to visit. It's been a few years since we last made it...

    Zombie deer

Yeah, once the pundits get hold of this, who knows where it goes? I'm open-minded and would like to see more research come out from a source without bias before implementing science-driven policy changes. That won't happen if Joe Public sinks his/her teeth into the story. Someone will...

The art of freeing up trees

Unfortunately, any areas that I open up to more sunlight seem to immediately fill in with invasive species. And now that the ash borer has hit us hard, there's a lot more areas opening up naturally. It feels like it's tough to win sometimes. Don't mind me, I'm just in a b***chy mood this...

The Forbidden Apple Tree Knowledge Thread

My F150 is loaded with a flip-over tent, flasher, tip-ups, and a BBQ grill for making venison dogs on the ice ;). We're at least two or three months from planting season up here in Yankee country. But I can dream...

    Latest trad bow ladder stand

Can you believe that Field and Stream discontinued their Outpost XL stand? According to the folks who work there, it was their most popular stand. What brain trust came up with that decision? I love my Millennium L110 stands but they are only hung after sufficient scouting to make sure that it's...
