Live from the ground blind or tree trunk 2024

Anyone else turkey hunting yet? Just had a huge Tom bobcat in the decoys, sacrificed the picture to wake my nine year old up. Hard to beat a sunrise like that! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Grafting chores complete

Grafted a few trees last week. Four on Antonovka and four on M111. All the scion is late dropping (November) Rusty coat from a neighboring farm. I’m a bit of an amateur, you’d think I grafted 100 trees with this mess. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Fall annual plot progress

This plot was planted on 8/26/23 by broadcasting Green Cover Seeds fall release. I usually mix my own but wanted to try their blend, it includes everything I usually try to combine. Sprayed August 12th (Gly and 24,d) Planted August 26th, roughly 100 pounds/acre Good rain event right after...

    First turkey!

I was finally able to put a bird in front of my son Zeke (8) and he did his part! Excellent time spent in the woods with my man cub. School is in session He’s already dragging me up the hill in the morning. Carrying a full load this season! Other fun was had! Sent from...

    Grafting and up-potting

I finally received my 2023 root stock from Burnt Ridge Nursery, 3 M111 and 3 Antonovka. Grafting was just as challenging as I remember from last year. Finished In the pot I up-potted a 2022 Antonovka/Yates from a 3 gallon to a 5 gallon pot. I think it would have been fine in the 3...

    Bear for dinner

Had NC bear steaks for dinner. Neighbor shot one and gave me a bunch of meat. I tried thin backstrap on the grill with salt and pepper, absolutely delicious. I canned the rest. Apparently bear doesn’t last too long in the freezer due to fat content. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    First sit of 2022

I’m off to a late start this year thanks to a broken hand in August but I finally made it out tonight. I hunted a “club” property in coastal CA. There are only four of us and I don’t have any say in what we do but it’s close and inexpensive. I scouted swamp chestnut oaks and found green acorns...

    New arrows for my daughter

Just finished these for my 12-year-old. 24 inches, 398 grains total weight. Really hoping she’ll join me this year! She seems interested but not overly passionate. She’s shooting them well at 15 yards. That’s going to be max in a deer this year at her draw weight/length. Sent from my...

    Bears climbing for acorns

I noticed heavy tree litter under a mature NWO I was scouting for deer sign. It was obvious something larger than a squirrel was to blame. I was a little surprised to see all the bear claw marks. Seems like risky business! I had previously thought the claw marks on another nearby white...

    Tree replacement, bear problem

As I lose the fight with bears in a few areas I’m considering replacing apple trees with something else. Apparently the aroma of apple trees is simply irresistible. Should I replace with: 1) pears (seem to attract fewer bears at least prior to fruit production) 2) chestnuts 3) sawtooth oak...

    Acorn ID

I picked up a few acorns today at my old high school in Charlotte, NC. Still loaded on 12/27!! I’m leaning towards black oak. I thought maybe pin or shumard but the long acorns are driving me towards black. Mainly smooth grey bark with vertical lines. Sorry, should have taken more pictures...

    Hunting and social media

Lifted from another forum. Interesting article and worth the read in my opinion. I don’t agree with all of this opinion piece but certainly some of it. https://freerangeamerican.us/matt-rinella-unfollowing-hunting-social-media/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Ground cover taking over

I noticed my GLY application back in August didn’t kill a small green leaf ground cover. I sprayed again just to make sure it got the message. It did not. The tiny leaves turned into a large mat in s few areas of my plot. Picture this is calling it smooth hawks beard or common dandelion...

    Youth options

My 11 year old shot my wife’s youth model .243 today. She likes shooting rimfire but one shot from the .243 was enough for her. Any other options besides wait until she’s older? She wants to hunt but isn’t ready for a deer rifle. Potential options: •.223-a little light for deer in my opinion...

    Sawtooth motherload

Apparently I’m in a good region for sawtooth landscape plantings. I’ve scouted four areas with ~75 trees; drop times from early September-? Some look like they won’t drop for another month or so. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
