    Clearing trails

The last few years here in the southern tier of NY have been hard on our Ashe trees. The emarald Ashe borers have decimated 90% of the Ashe trees on my property. We were up clearing the trails and cut up over 2 cord of wood just from the trees that fell across the trails. We even had a couple of...

    How old is this buck?

That looks like a well fed deer. I am no expert on aging deer. My best guess would be between 2 1/2 to 3 1/2. At 4 1/2 with a deer that well fed I would think you would be seeing the sagging belly and back. The other side of the coin is, being that well fed it should be exhibiting better antler...

    Doe in heat scents

I have had mixed succes over the years but enough success to keep using it. My favorite is the wafers. I have see a buck actually licking it one time. It’s not magic just anther tool in the bag when used during the right time.

What is your “go to” weapon for deer hunting ?

Lots of guys love them and I can only give my experience with them. In my 2 guns I tried them in a ruger77 RSI in 250 savage and a custom Mauser 98 in 7x57. The accuracy was not as good as my cup and core handloads (I hand loaded the Barnes copper solids also). Not terrible but not as good. The...

What is your “go to” weapon for deer hunting ?

Hell my Ithica 20 gauge Deerslayer smoothbore made in the 60’s would shoot sub 2” groups at 50 yards with pumpkin ball slugs. Killed a lot of deer with that shotgun.

Live from the stand - 2023

Was in the stand at 6 too dark to see anything when I heard footsteps. All I could see was a white rack as it walked between the tree and the ladder right under my stand. Only other deer I saw was a nice chocolate racked 8 point out in the neighbors pasture across the stone wall about 200 yards...

Live from the stand - 2023

Was up to my cabin Monday and mowed all the trails and my clover plot. I had finished mowing the clover and mowed out one trail that looped around and re- entered the clover from another direction I was back to clover in about 10 minutes and there were already 3 deer in there already eating the...

    New Side-By-Side UTV Thoughts?

I love my mule 2row seating. The dump box is the greatest aid as I get older. Now if I could only get it away from my grandaughter.

    Melanistic deer

I have seen several albino and white deer. I had a piebald deer in my scope ( no I did not shoot). This week I saw a large doe that was black. Not shiny black like a bear but definitely black. I had read of this coloration and seen pictures but in my56 years of deer observation and hunting this...

"Handmade Knives" Show us your Custom Knife

Pictured is my grandsons first design knife he is building all on his own. He layed it out by pencil freehand and ground and filed down the outline. New he needs to heat treat it next. He really seems to be enjoying himself.

Live from the stand - 2023

I went up to my hunting cabin this past weekend to see if these new knees would cooperate and let me climb my ladder stands. To my great surprise and delight I had no problems climbing up or down. Now to continue trimming shooting lanes.

    Wild cherry trees

The one fruit tree that seemed to escape the late may frost is the wild cherry trees they are absolutely sagging with cherries. Looks like a good acorn crop but here in NY our apples pears and grapes took it on the chin with very sparse fruit.
