    Buckwheat following Oats?

P.S. Jason - How are you? I haven’t been on the forum this year, been very busy! If you should know of anyone looking for a large, high-end trout fishing / deer hunting property, my place is on the market. 440 acres with 1/2 mile of Sturgeon River flowing through it. :)

    Buckwheat following Oats?

Thanks for the update. Looks like you did very well last year. Been hot and dry in Otsego County where my plots are. Glad I didn’t plant spring brassicas. I did put in another 2 acres of RR alfalfa, which got a decent start before the heat wave. Hope to get back and check on that next...

spraying clover and chicory food plot help

P.S. Mowing regularly will also help suppress many broadleaf weeds. You can set the height a bit higher if you don’t want to mow the clover (assuming it’s white or some other low growing type). Don’t mow right after applying Clearcast though. Wait a few weeks. Sent from my iPad using Deer...

spraying clover and chicory food plot help

Clearcast and Raptor are identical. Buy the cheaper Clearcast and follow the Raptor label. It works great, but takes time. Don’t expect glyphosate results and don’t get impatient and reapply. Sent from my iPad using Deer Hunter Forum

    Spring rape planting?

I never cut. The deer hammer it. Biggest problem is their insatiable appetite for the stuff. They would get a lot more if they would give it a break every now and then.

    Spring rape planting?

Bowman - I have a lot of experience with RR alfalfa in sandy soil. Search my old posts and you should find some info., including a link to an “all you need to know” alfalfa resource.

    Spring rape planting?

I did two years ago when we ran out of buckwheat before covering all the plots. Did surprisingly well. Plants got big and did not bolt. Doesn’t produce tubers but the deer eventually chowed on the big fat stems during fall hunting. Keep in mind I am in northern Michigan. Short growing...

    Broadleaf selective herbicide

Canada Thistle is evil stuff. In addition to Raptor, I would carefully gly hand spray each plant, and be prepared to do it over and over. It won’t die until all the energy stored in the deep roots has been exhausted. I fought it in my lawn for several years. Eventually you get the upper...

    Broadleaf selective herbicide

Me neither, since my clover is kura that took great pains to get established and theoretically will last forever. Raptor is the ticket for me. Buy under the cheaper “Clearcast”name and follow the Raptor label closely. Takes a little while but works wonderfully. Sent from my iPad using Deer...

    Alfalfa

In my opinion, alfalfa is perhaps the single best crop you can plant for deer forage... assuming you don’t reside in a high agriculture area where the other browse options are impossible to compete with. Search this forum for my previous posts on the subject, including a very useful link to a...

    Payoff?

Canada Thistle is evil. Takes years to exhaust all the stored energy in the deep roots. I fought it in my yard and won using the strategy below: Best advice is to spray gly spring and fall (not mid summer). Spring application makes plant waste energy used to push up new leaves. Fall...

    Crimson vs red clover?

Crimson is an annual. Won’t reseed unless you’re relatively south. Red and white are perennial. Perennial clovers will fix more N but if plan is to turnover quickly I would go with crimson. See what local farmers are doing and/or call coops / university county extensions, etc. Sent from my...

    Bugs in brassicas.

I sometimes have to spray pesticide. I try not to, but protecting expensive RR alfalfa from leafhoppers is a priority. Apple trees need protection for certain as well. I usually use a generic version of Sevin, available for farm use via my local coop. Easy to use with same three point...

    Payoff?

This is the time of year when we start to be able to judge how all our food plot planning / work / time / money paid off. Our plots have either grown well or not. Trail cams are telling us about actual utilization. Most importantly, the hunting itself is either underway or about to start...

    Appin turnip

Wow! Wish my deer would let anything grow that high before hunting season. I try to tell them to be patient and let things grow but they just won't listen to reason!
