Deer corn

Michigan hunting laws must be more lenient than PA. In most of PA you wouldn't let your neighbors know that you are hunting over bait, you would keep it as secret as a guy who has two girlfriends. Because shooting a deer over bait in most of PA is poaching, which can be thousands of dollars in fines and court costs, takes away your hunting privileges for 3 years, plus getting snobbed at all the local hangouts. Poaching isn't as popular as in the days when people poached deer to feed a hungry family. Nowadays poaching is considered stealing from honest people who play by the rules, and it's not considered snitching for an honest hunter to report it. Don't get me wrong, it still happens too much, but strictly on the sneak.

Baiting is so engrained in Michigan’s hunting culture.. It’s never gonna change or be very frowned upon. People aren’t all that open about it but I’m close to all my neighbors (extended family, family friends) so they’re not afraid to mention it.

Many people do make jokes about it though.. saying they’re buying sugar beets to make sugar, or putting corn out for the squirrels. It doesn’t bother me too much because I’m not sure I buy the whole CWD controversy behind the baiting ban.

But yeah.. Michigan’s hunting community is fighting back very hard to make baiting legal again. It’s only a matter of time. Gas stations are still putting out bagged bait, farm supply stores are still selling beets in bulk.. yeah I’d say the ban isn’t very effective

I think a lot of the reason behind the pro-baiting culture is that a lot of people say they do it to keep the deer alive. Michigan hunters think that their deer herd’s survival depends on the truckloads of bait they put out every fall.

If you’re curious to see it for yourself, if you have a Facebook go find a Michigan outdoors page and read the comments on a post about baiting. People are livid

Just curious, what's the penalty in Michigan for getting caught with a deer shot over bait?

Just curious, what's the penalty in Michigan for getting caught with a deer shot over bait?

Misdemeanor, Minimum $50 maximum $500 fine, loss of hunting privilege isn’t even guaranteed. Could get up to 90 days in jail

Michigan DNR doesn’t have any money so they won’t be flying around looking for bait piles anymore. I’ve never even seen the DNR in my hunting area.

So yeah, people aren’t likely to get caught, and if they do, the penalty is not harsh enough to stop many people

It's funny to me to see how the different Areas of the Country hold certain Values as "the way" and others are completely different.

Take Baiting or Hunting Deer with Dogs. Some states it would NEVER be considered and anyone that did such is a Low LIfe and needs to be turned in. In other States (or different areas within the same state even) it is considered Family Tradition and to even suggest it be outlawed you'd better be ready for a Fight. Threaten even in jest to shoot a Dog that runs Deer on Your Property and your Life will literally be in danger.

Some consider doing Food Plots and TSI and clearing areas to make a place for Deer Food as "normal", while in other areas the Terrain is so different that Dogs are the only way to get the deer out of it.

It is pretty easy to tell who has raised in what area each time these type topics come up.

Hunt how YOU want in Your Area as long as it's Legal to do so and Stop Worrying about how the "other guy" likes to Hunt.
