Anyone else just not into it this year?

I feel a bit better about everything. Got down to the lease today and got some recon in and some stands and stuff checked out...we had a wildfire go through there about 7 years ago and the areas I hunt have grown up so much that until we get leaf drop most of my stands are worthless. I got 3 spots that can be hunted early season down there. I also got a couple leaks fixed on the roof of our camper that is down there. Saw some runs and even a couple of scrapes and found a dead buck that may have been dead 3-4 days per the amount of meat left on the bones. It was at a waterhole down below the housing along our west side. We have lots of poaching up there and I figure someone got shot it and it ran down into our bottom to water and died...

Spending the afternoon in the oven, I mean ground blind with my 11 year old. He’s all jacked up been awaiting this hunt for weeks but I’ll be completely honest it’s miserable 90 degrees outside I’d rather be riding the air conditioned combine finishing up corn harvest.
But I’m not about to damper his enthusiasm.

I can relate on both sides of it. For me this has happened with fishing - It used to be that nothing was more important! Now I hardly get out. It was all about personal goals and satisfaction for me, it was a solitary pursuit - and when my work changed, so did my fishing.

But hunting is different - its a year long endeavor - and while my enthusiasm is different it is still strong. Someone mentioned the camaraderie - and that I'm looking forward to as much as the hunting. My dad still bow hunts at 76 years old - and I don't wan't to miss any of that. I think he's more excited now than he was when I was 14 years old. My friends come, my hunting partner and I always realize the fruits of our labor working the plots - and its time to enjoy the season.

Good luck to everyone!

No funk here. I cant get enough. I bowhunt somewhere in the world year round. I enjoy it very much and am always looking forward to the next hunt.

Wish I had the funk.

I’ve got tons of chestnuts and pears dropping and all kinds of bear and deer pics daily

Between kids lacrosse and gymnastics tournaments, I won’t have a fee weekend until December. I usually only get out for a couple of days a season but I’ll be lucky to hunt 3 hours this year.

I feel your pain. Time to check your priorities?

Nah. Priorities straight. Family first. Sure wish my kids wanted to hunt though. Leaves change and my DNA kicks in with the hunter instinct. I’ll be watching a lacrosse game and scopin out the white oaks in tree line at the same time.

You have to be there for your kids first and foremost because they’re only that age for so long, and you don’t want to end up the proud father of a stripper or a convict.

I try to schedule some time during the week for me, normally it’s to go shooting for an hour or two at a local shooting club that is 22 minutes away. I took tomorrow off for our bow opener and I’m ridiculously excited despite the 90/70 forecast. Should be fewer hunters out is how I’m looking at it.

Or some screwed up sports player that has never seen the woods because their parents wanted to re-live their past childhood through their kids. Or worse, some liberal animal lover because the reality of the difficulties of making it as a pro sports player set in about the time they graduated high school. Take them kids to the woods! Trust me.

While on that, you know they make kids play sports and practice on SUNDAYS now??? On the Lord's Day? Churches sit empty while bleachers are full. I GUARANTEE that is gonna come back to haunt them in spades.

With this heat and drought, could it be EHD?

Don’t think so...we haven’t been in a drought this year...wettest summer I can remember. Other lease members that have been down there working have heard the single shots just at daylight and dark already...

Okie and anyone else feeling ho-hum about hitting the woods this season, two younger guys that are a part of the Big Sandy deer Management Co-operative with me and one other landowner made a video that is sure to fire up those of us on the edge. Trevor and James start out their 2019 bow hunting elk adventure video in the normal way but the ending is far from normal; actually it is amazing. It has me sighting in the guns and scrambling to get everything in shape for the coming deer season. I would have gotten ready in time but this video really got me into high gear to get ready for hunting season.

High of 75 today and it is 68 now. I am midway back into our 90 acres and it is absolutely raining white oak acorns. As soon as I hooked my bow to the pull up rope I had a heavy deer with deep snorts bouncing around about 20 yards from me and it went off into the creek bottom snorting for quite some distance. I went ahead and climbed into my ladder and another deer started snorting at me from about 30 yards in the opposite direction and I figured they just watched me climb up. From first gray light till now I have had some small bucks and does around me eating acorns. Starting to get that old feeling...
