2019 Live from the Stand

Then I'd get to hammering them and move to a spot where there was a buck I wanted to shoot. Am I missing something? Not being an ass, just really curious.

Doe season starts Sept. 15. I just like to go sit in the woods and watch deer...beats working. My friends think I’m crazy. Plus, you never know when a new buck might show up.

If you’re crazy, we might be kinfolk, (although not close kin because I wouldn’t hunt deer in this heat). When it comes to sitting in the woods though, I’m your huckleberry ! I just prefer to start about the middle of September.

I have a hard time sitting when I know I am not actually hunting. I will have a lot more time to sit this fall but I am going to be choosing the days to hunt based on the conditions and wind. Never been able to do it that way because I always had to hunt anytime I had a day off and invariably the best days of the year to hunt I was always at work...

Anytime I’m sitting I’m hunting. Hogs and coyotes are 24/7/365 and I strive to never let either get away if the pass my way.

Trust me, you’re gonna like picking your own days to hunt. Like you, for many years my job dictated what days and even IF I hunted at all. Now, no job and three different places to hunt, I pick the day, the wind direction, and the frequency that I will hunt a particular stand.

I am looking forward to this fall...got back from SD Wednesday night. Busted tail plowing, disking, and seeding yesterday trying to catch the several chances of rain we have this week and finally some cooler temps as well. Setting up feeders and a new double ladder today and doing a little chainsaw work and then stay out till October...

That wouldn't be until around Nov. 15 in north Georgia. But, I get you. Can't see a "new" buck if you're sitting on the couch!

Any updates on this...this is the first morning in Oklahoma I feel like I could have sat a tree had it been season. The horseflies are worse than I have ever seen though :(

Wow...aug 15th and you are hunting deer. Our squirrel season opens aug 15th! Statewide deer doesn't open here until 10/1....unless your hunting urban deer (which I don't). Soonest I will be in a stand will be the last weekend in September and that will be supporting the youth hunt. I won't hunt for me until almost Halloween, unless I get a pic or video of something to motivate me otherwise or I see a cold front on the way.

It's hot enough as it is here sometimes in October....I can't imagine deer hunting in August! But I guess if that is what you are used too it's just how it is. Stay cool and give'm the shaft!

I would be concerned about spoilage. When is the rut in SC and Florida?

Okie, I’ve never deer hunted this early, but I’ve killed several pronghorn when temps were in the nineties. We always had an understanding that when one guy killed, another would stop hunting and come help get it skinned, quartered, and on ice. We were all in the same truck on the trip, two or three of us, so most times the guy that scored did not have the truck anyway. We never had any spoilage, even the trip where two of us killed on the first day and I had to drive 30 miles one way for ice. We should have gotten it on the way up, but forgot ! Some say getting ice beforehand is bad juju, but I say be prepared !:)

Sitting in a blind over a waterhole in 90 degree temps may have been something I would have done in my 20’s, 30’s, even 40’s but it seems these last 3 or 4 years I no longer have the urge to do anything like that. Heck I am not even very excited about the first of October because typically some of our best deer have been rifle killed around that time (not rifle season). I am going to pick and choose days to hunt this year so it’s gonna be cool or I am not going... I have had flies blow on my deer before I have gotten them out of the woods here in the past. I really want to build an insulated cooling room with a small AC unit so I can hang deer for a week or more to age before I butcher them. Back when I was a kid it was colder in the fall and my uncle used to hang deer a couple weeks in his shed. Some of the best venison ever!
