2019 Eagle Beans

Gotta plant more ! And then MORE ! My IC peas are about gone too, because I planted two plots to buckwheat in search of soil improvement, but I’ll have triple the acreage next year.......if I live that long ! ;)
Yeah, that's a problem. Very limited on plantable ground. Im expanding my Fall plot by another 1/4 acre. Its mostly Red Clay, so that presents another problem.

Well timely rains have kept things going in my neck of the woods. This is my main field.Beans/corn in foreground and a 5 way summer mix up close.

The beans/corn are looking pretty good where they have not been hammering them

Less so where they have found them

This is my second year without a fence and I doubt a lot of the field will even canopy, but as long as there is a green leaf the day before first frost it will have done its job.On my last trip up several areas that were basically stems when I got there had 4-6 nice size leafs on them when I left. Go Eagles.
Also plant a 5 way mix around the field perimeter for quail, turkey, dove and such.Has Buckwheat, Sunflower, Millet and two types of climbing bean/pea.

Eagle beans are great, I just don’t have enough room anymore to plant them with expectations of them making it past about six weeks. Pretty expensive for a six week crop. I wish I had the room.

When I got up there a couple weeks ago I discovered I had an infestation of Sicklepod aka Coffeeweed aka Devil Spawn. It hurt bad but I had to bushog, till and replant a little over an acre where it was just to thick to deal with. Will be paying my helper up there to hand pull the next 4 weeks or so.

Brad, I planted feed store beans one year and got an infestation of pigweed ( from the beans I’m sure). I didn’t even know what pigweed was. I found out pretty damn quick though. Me and two other guys hand pulled most of it out the first year and I still had to go RR Eagle beans for two years after to get rid of them. The place I owned at the time, I could get by with a couple acres of beans because I had a low deer density and a couple of good clover plots. Don’t have the room for that now though.

Very nice cutman - beans handled the drought very well. Looking forward to seeing how your hunting season goes and if the beans play a role as a hunt plot or a destination plot - Great job!! Super Pics!!

Unreal... looks like they got about every single leaf in that field!
Perhaps it’s an indication that the native habitat isn’t providing enough food for a herd of that size

Uhg. Well they were pretty, for a while. I’m sure I would see the same thing. I’m sure you plan to notill a winter crop into them the next few weeks. Plan B.

wow! Amazing pics cutman. It's been 5 yrs since we've done summer plots. I'm going to give it a go next year in our largest plot which is now pushing 6 acres and see if we can plant more than they can eat.

It will be interesting to see if they try to put out new leaves. That’s why people pay the big bucks for Eagle seed, right?
