WR planting dates

I have been searching and cannot find what I am looking for. I am planting WR in the near future and cannot find when I should be planting it. I do not want to plant too early and have it get full of stems and tough before winter but still want to get it in early enough to put on some growth before the snow flies. The first frost dates for my area around mid to late September.

When should I be planting it?

If it does put on too much growth am I able to mow it?

I live in southwest Virginia. Here in the mountains, we plant around Labor Day. Maybe a week or so earlier if temps and rain support it

Labor day in zone 6b works well. I'd plant earlier rather than later, that way if there's a problem you have more options.

I'm planting it in late August in northeast Georgia. In the past I have waited into Sept but then it gets too dry and hot to germinate then when it does rain in late Oct it gets too cold to get any growth. Gonna try to get it going with late summer thunderstorms before Fall droughts.

I'm in the same zone as you, right across the MN/WI border -- Mid August (15-19 seems about right).

I'm going out this weekend to get my turnips and other brassicas in the ground, along with AWP and plan to toss some leftover wheat in with it, just to give the AWP something to climb.

In mid August I will go check the status and topdress with some WR - especially if there are any failed plots or bare spots due to water pooling or something else.

I called my local Southern State co-op and they expect the winter rye shipment late this week or early next week. I’m anxious to get my order picked up
