WI soil test on sale

Hey guys - got an e-mail from WI that their soil tests are on sale. I've used 4 different companies over the years (most were for my previous landscaping experience) & I like WIs the best. Actually better than the VT extension here in VA... Just a heads up.

WINA website shows regular price of $13.95.

On sale where? For how much? What nutrients and other variables do they test for?

They were on sale for four for the price of three. I bought eight, probably won’t use them all for two years but they don’t wear out.....

I guess my answer would have to be: ain’t anybody offering any free soil tests to me. I might could get it done through the county, but then I’d have to drive 20 miles one way to the county seat and last time I checked, gas ain’t free ! What few soil tests I have to do now, $12/$15 isn’t much, and it’s hassle free.

Do you mind telling us where you are getting it free? I’m assuming you’re referring to Virginia Tech’s website. I pulled it up and it’s showing $10 in-state and $16 out-of-state. If there is one that is free that is available to anyone, I’m sure there would be a lot of people interested.

My bad... It's only free for in state commercial farm samples.
Sorry I used to run livestock and wasn't looking at it closer.

For $14, you get 7 data points. For $11 more, you can get that and the other 14 missing tests @ Midwest Labs

What's missing:

Base saturation K
Base saturation Ca
Base saturation Mg
Base saturation H
Base saturation Na
Copper
Boron
Sulfur
Manganese
Excess Lime
Sodium PPM
Buffer pH
Zinc
and they don't tell you what kind of phosphorus number they're giving you.

Granted, if you're not gonna use all the info, it doesn't pay to get it. But if you're after a proper lime recommendation or fertility recommendation, you need those base saturation numbers and your buffer pH. Sulfur and boron can tell a story even if you don't plan to address them as well.

This one is a big deal to me. We've got tens or hundreds of thousands into these places. I can't see the wisdom in not spending the extra few bucks for the rest of the info. Hopefully we all get to plot and hunt these places for many years. It pays to know.

WVU does soil tests for free except you pay for mailing. Bags available at your county agent. I’ve used WHI and they are fine but I get same and more from WV. They email results usually within 10 days. Post offices know its soil checking time as bags of dirt are brought in for mailing.

I can understand if you are a farmer, or trying to grow lots of different food plots, but for wheat in the fall, and IC peas in the spring, or a clover plot or two, I get all I need from WI’s soil test. And when I’m gone, nobody is gonna plant any food plots where I hunt, just as they didn’t before I came.
