There were a cluster of stump sprouts coming up in my front yard and I thinned them to keep the two with the best characteristics. Now I’d like to know what species they actually are to see if they are something I want to keep.

Leaves make me think sassafras, but the bark isn’t quite right. Is the new growth a very obvious green color and does the trunk seem to have a twist at some point?

My daddy always looked for small sassafras saplings to make posts in a wire fence gap. Light and long lasting when dried out, so hard you could hardly drive a staple in them.
