South Dakota hunting opportunities?

Since my spouse has taken a position in South Dakota I am just wondering if someone can point me in the right direction for hunting and fishing opportunities near Or on the Rosebud Reservation? I expect to be able to spend some time in the area and looking forward to hunting/fishing in a different state...

Of particular interest are average “dressed” weight of the deer and realistic antler inches that can be taken on fairly regular basis?

Not sure about there but in the far northwest corner of Nebraska I've killed some whoppers over the past 20 years. 150 inches and a 200 lb deer are not out of the ordinary. On the Indian Reservations just over the South Dakota line they kill some MONSTERS.

Okie - I've hunted pheasant outside of Pierre many times. It is some of the most beautiful country I've ever had the pleasure to visit. Never hunted deer but jumped several in wide open spaces while pheasant hunting. Keep us posted on your progress in finding hunting opportunities for deer up there.

Never deer hunted there but the goose/duck hunting is terrific and I echo the pheasant hunting as well. Big fun.

I have heard good things about the turkey hunting in that part. A black hills turkey is still on my list.

So far we have driven across Kansas and then through the sand hills of Nebraska to a town called Valentine. In mid Kansas a car smeared a deer and was pulled over with the deer in pieces down the road. There were other cars pulled over to assist and we had nowhere to pull a 26’ uhaul truck pulling a trailer with my wife’s SUV over at so we continued on. Saw 3 turkeys in mid Kansas, 2 in north Kansas, 8 in southern Nebraska and 1 in the Sandhills. Saw a lot of flood damage along the Loup river in Nebraska. On to South Dakota now...

You go about 100 miles west of Valentine to the town of Crawford, and that is where I spend November. Lot of big deer around Valentine. Millions of turkeys around Crawford.

Been here a few days but only got to drive around yesterday due to setting up the new house. Saw well over 100 deer yesterday...whitetails and mule deer. Mostly whitetails here in Rosebud where we are and we have seen them right here in town on the reservation. Driving between a town called Martin and Pine Ridge yesterday almost hit 4 pheasant roosters...antelope all around here as well as elk and have seen several Merriam turkeys...

It’s a freaking zoo out here!!!

Northwest Nebraska is the same way!! Better be careful in Pine Ridge. That place can get a little unhinged when the fire water comes out on the weekend.

Oh yea, I know! My wife worked there for over a month a couple years ago...

You need to go just a little further west and check out the bighorn sheep and elk, too. Probably elk where you are, but definitely over toward Custer.

You're gonna have a good time !

I certainly did! Heard turkeys gobbling when I walked out the door of our house there Saturday morning.

There are Elk on the reservation but no bighorn. We went to Custer and saw several signs telling us to beware of bighorns on the road but never saw any...
Johnny...You may decide to never return to OK. Great pics!
Alas I am home and back at work now. I miss my wife and the scenery in South Dakota. Going to go back ASAP!
