I’m 7/7 on wood duck boxes so far this year, and two nests have already hatched!

Unfortunately, I found these two littles ones in one of the nests. They either hatched and couldn’t get out, hatched and were suffocated, or hatched late and didn’t know what to do.

It’s still very early in the season. I’ll probably get second nests in most of the boxes.

Cutman, any chance you have design plans for making them? I was just talking to my family the other day about wanting to add two boxes to our pond. I am sure I can find them on line somewhere but thought I would start with you. I am a duck hunters from long ago and the drake woodie is one of the most beautiful birds on the planet!!!!

Longleaf, thanks for the info and will start to get the plans in place. Unfortunately this years residences will have to find another suitable location but hopefully next year I will have some free loaders living on my pond :):)

Good morning. I don’t build my own boxes. The SCDNR has a program for landowners to get free boxes and predator guards every year...they are built by convicts in jail. I’ve also bought some boxes online, but that is less than ideal because they don’t come with the predator guards.

These are the plans provided by the SCDNR:

Interesting, was not aware the DNR had that program. Mind pointing me in the right direction with a phone number to call?

eta: disregard, looks like there is a number at the bottom of the link you posted. Thanks.

When i was a kid, about 40 years ago, I found a wood duck nest in an old hollow tree and secretly put about 8 wood duck eggs under one of our hens that was sitting. Talk about hilarious when all 8 of those hatched out. Them suckers scattered out from under that hen like you had turned over a box of marbles. They grew fast and eventually just flew away. At least that guaranteed 8 that a snapping turtle or snake wasn't going to get!
